Installing WHS with some drives having data that you want to keep RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have my server with 4 drives, 2 of them have data I want to keep, and the other 2 are blank. So.... My question is, how would I go about installing WHS to one of my blank drives and not have it format and lose all my data on the 2 drives with data I want to keep?

  • Disconnect or remove any drive you don't want formatted as part of the installation. Once you progress past the first reboot, every drive that setup sees will be formatted.

The supported way to get data from a drive to your server, and add the drive to your storage pool, is to connect the drive to some computer on your network, copy to the server's shares, and then move the drive to your server. The unsupported but somewhat faster alternative is to install the drive in your server, then log in to your server using Remote Desktop (use the user Administrator and the password you will set for the console), and copy from that drive to your server's shares using the link to the shares that's on the server's desktop.
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
