Microsoft office 2003 not genuine, Uninstalled on one computer and installed on another computer RRS feed

  • Question

  • We had one computer that had office 2003. We upgraded that computer to office 2007 due to taking a college course that required it. Now that 2003 is no longer installed on the first computer we installed it on the second computer. It is coming up as not genuine. How do I fix this. It worked find on the first computer. Never any problems. Ran dignastics as stated by the moderator.  Below is what is said:

  • Hello mhui,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

    OGA Data-->
Office Status: 114 Blocked VLK 2
Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 - 114 Blocked VLK 2
    OGA Version: Registered, 2.0.48.0

    Office Diagnostics: 025D1FF3-230-1

The report is telling us that your Dell computer has a Non-Genuine installation of a Volume Licensing-only edition of Office Professional Edition 2003.  Your installation was done with a widely pirated and now-blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK).

Office does not have an internal check for whether it is Genuine or not, so it must rely on an external check that would happen, for example, when the Office Genuine Advantage Notifications Utility was installed as part of Windows Update.  Maybe the previous installation on the other computer never had the OGA Notifier Update installed.

The currently installed Volume License did not come preinstalled on your computer from Dell.  If your computer did come with an extra cost installation of Office from Dell, then it was replaced by this nongenuine installation at some point.  If it was replaced, then in order to Get Genuine, you have to use the product discs and product key supplied by Dell with the computer purchase, and after uninstalling the nongenuine installation of Office, install the genuine Office from those Del-supplied discs.

Volume Licensing editions of Office such as your installation of Office Professional Edition 2003 are not to be sold to individual consumers, and are only to be sold to larger businesses, educational institutions, and governmental agencies who have a Volume License Agreement with Microsoft.

These Volume Licenses should not be sold to consumers because they are not permanent licenses; they are subject to a current Volume Licensing Agreement that has a finite term, sort of like a lease.  Consumers thinking they purchased permanently licensd software would understandably be upset when their software stopped working at the end of a lease. If you purchased Office Professional Edition 2003 thinking you were buying genuine retail Office Professional for consumers with a permanent license, please return the software to the place of purchase for replacement or a full refund.

You can also review the Office Genuine Advantage FAQ to see if you qualify for the discounted or complimentary replacement program called the Office Genuine Offer:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en&sGuid=4ba10af9-ffaa-4cb9-9af4-6aff8a220262#ID0EKNAC  If you decide to take advantage of the Office Genuine Offer, please click the Learn More Online link to start your participation.

  • If I do not qualify for whatever reason (ie. no longer have receipt). Will there be any issues if I just purchase mircosoft office 2003 or 2007 on my own and install it? Or do I have to go through the genuine advantage.

  • Hello mhui,

By going thru the Genuine Advantage notices, you are able to take advantage of the Complimentary or Discounted Offers, if you qualify.  These offers are not available thru normal retail sales.  However, under some circumstances, you can purchase Office at a better price than is offered to you with the GA discount.

However, please be careful when buying software, especially if you are not buying from a well-known source such as the major office supply, general merchandise, and electronics retailers.  And Holy Cow there is so much counterfeit software on the typical auction sites, so I would not recommend buying from such a venue!!

If you purchase Office 2003, you may run into the situation where remnants of the previous nongenuine installation prevent the OGA Notifier from working correctly, which will manifest itself in continued nongenuine messages even after you install a presumably genuine Office 2003.  This is usually not difficult to fix by following the procedure in this MS KB:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/903275

If you purchase Office 2007, you are much less likely to run into the above issue, but if you do, there's a KB for that:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919895/
