I recently purchased a laptop and a copy of XP Pro at an estate sell.  There was no product key # for the software and I am unable to get ahold of the original owner for the software.  How do I get this #?

    Hello Sassilem,

Your issue appears to be outside the scope of the Genuine Advantage forum. In an attempt to assist I would like to provide some additional information which may help along with what Carey provided :-). Please contact Dell Technical support @ 800- 624-9896 and explain the situation.  They should be able to assist with your request and/or questions.  Recovery CD’s are specific to your computer manufacturer. Sassilem is the software a Dell Recovery media disc? Please reference the once website Carey provided and this will give you a baseline what to look for. The dell software should indicate it is Dell.   Since the telephone number and web sites are not maintained by Microsoft we cannot make any warranty as to their validity.

I have included their contact information here for your convenience:

  • If Windows XP came preinstalled by the computer manufacturer, look on the back, side, or the bottom of the computer for the Certificate of Authenticity (COA).

What is a Certificate of Authenticity? http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/coa.mspx

If the computer is still operational and you wish to find the Product Key currently in use:

Retrieve your Windows XP CD key: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
