Straightforward question: how do I request an activation key or register myself as wanting to receive one?

Activation keys are randomly distributed to a small number of beta testers to test certain One Care functionality. I don't think there is a way to request a key.Friday, August 31, 2007 1:27 PMModerator

Hi,
You can't get an activation key as WLOC 2 is a beta version.
You can use it until WLOC will be released for the whole pulic.
So, you don't need to activate it. You can use it like that.

Some people in the forums here have been receiving beta keys, though. Any chance I could get one as well (where should I register?).

Hi guys,
I received one of those activation keys, but I can't seem to use it! I created a new Live ID like the beta email instructed, and opened OC2.0, but there's no "Activate" button - only one that says "Subscribe". When I click subscribe, it asks for my Windows Live ID and password, so I enter the new one I created for the beta and then it tells me "It looks like you need a subscription". I clicked continue online and it just brings me to the Live betas site where you can sign up for the beta. I've even gone so far as to sign up the new Live ID to the beta, but it makes no difference. I come back to OC and clicking next brings me back to step 1 again. I've never been asked to enter my product key!
Can you help me out?

Clear your IE temporary internet files and cookies. Close all browser windows and try to activate your 2.0 beta once again. Use the new LiveID you created and then it should ask you for a token to start your "subscription." If that still fails, contact support here -
Support for 2.0 Beta - http://help.live.com/help.aspx?project=onecarev2 - use the "Get More Help" link in the lower right of the page to contact support via email.

Tried that and it still doesn't work for me. I want to beta test the 2.0. Could it be asking me because I previously signed up for the 1.0 version and cancelled (it was just not reliable enough and I hate the way it didn't check incoming email until it hit the hard drive).
No matter what I've tried, I can't get past the screen where it demands the key. Microsoft want to send me a beta key so I can try this thing?
fyi, I'm using this on vista ultimate 64.
thanks,
Allen

Allen, when you install 2.0 it should not be asking you to activate at all. If you try to activate, you would need a key, of course, as you can't subscribe. So, simply leave it it trial beta mode. If it shows expired, then you should check your PC date/time as it being way off could also cause the trial/beta to show expired.
