Windows 7 Ultimate Not Genuine Issues RRS feed

  • Question

  • Bought a laptop off craigslist last year.  Its a Toshiba Satellite that had Windows 7 Ultimate loaded onto it and the guy said he lost the recovery CD for it.  Has worked fine now for months and today started the black screen with the message that windows may not be genuine.  Here's my diagnostic report.  I'm hoping someone can tell me what's going on.  Thanks in advance.

This copy of windows is counterfeit.  The key that is in use is the blacklisted lenovo key.  This key was leaked before windows 7 was released and no PC's were sold using this key.  If you want to keep windows 7 ultimate on the machine you will need to purchase a full retail license for Windows 7 Ultimate.  A clean install is recommended because you don't know what else the loader could have installed.  I'm thinking that a hackers loader tool was used to install the counterfeit copy of Windows 7 Ultimate.  Noel or another forum volunteer will know for sure if a loader was used.  I could be wrong.  If I missed something or I'm wrong about a loader being used would someone kindly let me know what I missed.

  • No chance.  You were swindled.  The seller made the computer more salable by faking a copy of Windows 7.  There is no way that there was ever a Windows 7 recovery disk for this computer.  He didn't lose it.  The recovery disk was for Vista and he did not want you to know that.  It breaks down like this:

Your computer has a "factory installed" copy of Windows 7.

    Windows Product ID Type: 2

    Windows License Type: OEM SLP

That had to have been installed at the factory when the computer was built.  SLP copies are only legitimate when part of the original equipment.  You cannot purchase Type 2 licenses and install them yourself.

You computer was built on February 22, 2008.

    <Date>20080222000000.000000+000</Date>

Which means that it is impossible that a Type 2 license was installed at the factory because Windows 7 did not release to manufacturers until July 24, 2009, fully a year and a half after your computer was made.

Also, your BIOS has SLIC tables for a Hewlett Packard,

    SLIC HPQOEM
    SLIC-MPC

even though the manufacturer of the motherboard is Toshiba,

    <Manufacturer>TOSHIBA</Manufacturer>

Someone, probably the seller, hacked the SLIC table to fool the software into auto-activating.  Recent improvements to the Windows Activation Technology has enabled Windows to identify these hacker methods and that is why your software is no longer genuine.

You need to order recovery media from Toshiba or a third party like Recovery-Disks.com and restore the Vista that shipped with the computer or purchase a full license copy of Windows 7 from a reliable retailer like the Microsoft Store or Amazon Corp. and reinstall.  An upgrade copy will not help you in this case unless you first install an earlier version of Windows since your present copy is a counterfeit.  Do NOT purchase Windows from eBay, the Amazon Marketplace, or other discount website because there are tens of thousands of counterfeit copies for sale there.  You can browse this forum for threads describing this.
