WHS Crashes when inserting a new drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • MotherBoard: SuperMicro X7SBE

Scenario 1: Raid 1 with two 500GB disks

First prompt during install I select iaSTOR and it continues with install.  On second F6 prompt, I install the ICH9R drivers and WHS installs fine.  But for some reason when I add an additional drive, the system crashes and raid shows "Error Occured (0)" on both raid members.  Before anyone starts slashing on RAID not being supported, I know and I have implemented this approach for almost all 4 WHS systems I've built.

Scenario 2: I also tried with no raid (1-500GB disk)

When adding additional drives, nothing happens.  I have to reboot system for it to detect drives and when I yank one out while in WHS, system crashes. I changed in BIOS to IDE Legacy, but then it won't boot into OS.

  • Update:  I just downloaded the latest ICH9R drivers from Intel's site and rebuilt the server.  Now when I insert a new drive, the crash is a bit more graceful.  I get a Delayed Write Error and then it crashes instead of blue screening.  The raid members automatically fall into a "Rebuild" state and at least now it boots back up.
