Validation problems RRS feed

  • Question

  • Like many others, I am experiencing validation problems. My computer came with Vista installed by a major manufacturer. Vista is activated and runs fine, but it is not validated for downloads from MS. When I try to download, for example the diagnostic program or KB931573 I get the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage." When I click the validate button, the screen give directions about the ActiveX bar, but there is no ActiveX bar. Following the alternative validation methods gets me nowhere. I've run the MGS Diagnotic tool kit (downloaded from a non-MS cite) This is what I get.

  • Dear Stephen,

The best you can do for me is instruct me to uninstall Firefox (which did not fix the problem) and then direct me to the fee required support? Fortunately, Google found the answer in an old entry in the XP validation forum:
    http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/thread/ec47ffcf-a4cb-42ad-ba48-68b57ee35555/
Updating the instructions found there to be consistent with Vista:
open Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > from the menu on the left, select Manage Network Connections > Right click on the active connection > Properties > Continue > for Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) click Properties > Use the following DNS server addresses > set the preferred to 4.2.2.2 and the alternate to 4.2.2.3.

With this change, I am now able to download from microsoft, validate, and perform all of the other tasks I am supposed to be able to do with a valid Vista installation.

  •  Hello Dhgbuz,

First I noticed you are downloading the MGA Diagnostic Tool (from a non-MS Site) and your default web browser is not IE 7. Please download the MGA Diagnostic Tool from Microsoft and make IE 7 your default browser prior running the tool

    Thank you,

  • Stephen,

Thank your for your reply. I am unable to download MGA Diagnostic Tool from Microsoft, at least not when using the link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 and this computer. When I try, I get the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage", which is my original problem.

I used an older XP computer to download the MGA Diagnostic Tool from MS. I have run the tool and the results are below. As requested, I have made IE7 my default browser, using both the Internet Options under Tools from IE and using the Default Programs from the "Start" button. Re-running the diagnistic program after a reboot, it still lists Firefox as the default browser even though when I start Firefox, I get the warning that it is no longer the default.)

I also used the old XP computer to download KB931573-x86. I ran this and received the same message I received when the update had been provided by the manufacture: "This update does not apply to your system"

Just to confirm, I have again tried to validate for MS downloads, but the validation failed. (the ActiveX bar does not appear and when I try the alternative method, I get the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message.

  • Morning dhgbuz,

Please try and uninstall FireFox from your computer. Next restart the PC. See if this helps. If not you may have to visit http://support.microsoft.com/ph/11732#tab0 and locate help in the upper right hand corner.

    Take care
