How to recover from primary disc failure (Windows Home Server) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Background
    I got a Windows Home Server 2011 with a total of 6 large (1.5 TB+) hard drives.

After years of uptime my primary disc stared to get really slow and showed lots of read errors and finally stop working - disc failure in short.

It was a Western Digital WD20EARS drive, it’s within warranty so I will get a new one... but...

I do not have any mirrored copy of the prime drive (all other… L). I do get a copy of the failed disc, but as it had several cluster errors the files might be a bit corrupt. It’s not possible to boot from the new drive anyway, I get told to start the repair from DVD’s.

The repair asks for a mirror/backup which I don’t have… what’s my options? I do have the failed disc and I am able to copy most of my files including Windows directory etc. But I am not able to boot on it…

  • Hi,

Since you don’t have the backups of the server, we may not restore the server using the installation DVD. Maybe we could only reinstall WHS 2011 after getting the new hard drive.

    Hope this helps.
