  • Hello EGC san diego,

Both the Windows XP Pro and Office Enterprise 2007 installed on your Dell Dimension 3000 computer are Volume Licensing installations.

Currently, the Office Enterprise 2007 installaltion is reporting as nongenuine.

If your use of these Volume Licensing installations of Windows XP Pro and Office Enterprise 2007 is in association with an organization that has a Volume Licensing Agreement, then please contact the IT support staff of the organization for further assistance.

If your use is not asociated with such an organization and you are an individual consumer, then having Volume Licensing editions of Microsoft software installed on your personal computer generally is an indication that you have become a victim of software piracy and/or counterfeiting.

  • Thanks Dan,

I bought the computer used as an individual from an individual...I had no idea such an issue could exist.   "Let the buyer beware" I guess...lesson learned.  I still don't understand why it passed every validation check and then says non-genuine...  as a buyer, you can check that the software is valid...but that means nothing as later you get the validation overturned.

  • Hello EGC san diego,

The good news is that you should be able to fix the Windows part of the situation.

First, establish whether the computer has a Certificate of Authenticity for Windows.  If so, then the computer is still licensed to run the version and edition of Windows listed on the CoA.

Next, record the ownership transfer of the computer with Dell:  https://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/change_order/tag_transfer?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

Next, after the ownership transfer has been recorded by Dell, request a set of backup discs so you can put the original Genuine Windows (as described by the CoA) back onto the computer:  http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/en/backupcd_form?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&redirect=1

One way to enjoy the use of Office and avoid the pitfalls of the nongenuine installation of Office that is now on the computer would be to uninstall the nongenuine Office, restart twice, then install the free Office 2010 Beta that will work just fine until October 2010:  http://www.microsoft.com/office/2010/en/default.aspx
