  • Hello, I would be very grateful for any help in my problem. This has all come about since trying to download/install sp2 as I am having a few problems including security issues with my pc. Microsoft would not install as I am not genuine?!? (Sorry, I am not very computer buffed!) Anyhoo I have went through the validation procedure put in my product key from pc casing, (after going through all genuine steps) but am getting message saying 'product key entered is not valid for this system' ?!? I have Windows XP Pro running on system but it does say Windows XP Home Edition on the Product Key sticker!?! I have brought this pc second hand with the Windows already installed paying a fair amount for what I thought was an legit pc from what I thought to be decent people, I have read on what to do before posting, my OEM/Product Key sticker has 'OEM Product' in black along with the Product key number and Windows XP Home Edition also in black. I have run the diagnostic tool also, (info below). I am stuck and have this dreaded feeling I have been stung and will have to purchase another pc or pay out more money for another disc/key?!  As said I would be very grateful for any light shed.     Now Iam really baffled, after reading someone saying to imput last 3 sets of 5 product key numbers into google I have just done this and it seems the product key (listed above) is a well used, and what looks like worldwide used universal key that every man and his dog has used!! But as I stated above this is not the product key I have on my sticker (which having done the tests through this site is genuine, sticker that is!?) What do I do???? I feel really silly and niave and gutted all at the same time. My PC is still running ok but Im not happy myself being 'illegal' and not being able to install the much needed sp2. Again even the littlest comment or feedback would be great. Thankyou

    Thank you for posting your diagnostic information. Diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue. We are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. I can see right away what the issue is and why you are not passing validation.  Unfortunately, the product key used to install Windows XP Professional is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked per the request of the legal VLK holder.  As a rule, VLK editions of either an Operating System and/or Office should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VLK editions for flexibility in installing many computers. Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP and MS Office are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.

       If you want to keep Windows XP Pro installed on the computer, then your best option is to participate in the Genuine Windows Offer and purchase a WGA Kit.  You will be emailed a Product Key that can be used immediately for your currently non- genuine installation of XP Pro, and then about 2-3 weeks later you will receive a genuine Microsoft Windows XP Pro full retail CD and COA, which you can use to do a clean installation (recommended).

        First, if this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer or operating system and let them know the operating system is a counterfeit copy.  Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the VLK status. Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.
