Unable to backup PC thats been updated to Win8.1 pro X64 RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • My main PC Win 8.1 pro x64 upgraded on release day of 8.1pro has not had a successful backup since then.

Only just had a warning come up that not had a successful back up recently.

Have a message about lack of disk space.

The message is "insufficient storage Space, Backup cannot save a snapshot of the volume on this computer because the computer does not have enough storage space available"

The server has 3tb free space available on the backup drive, and 4tb available for the server backup

All my other PC's and laptops 6 off in total (all upgraded at same time to Win 8.1 pro x64) have had successful backups.

Have tried a manual back up but that failed after about 30 seconds with same error.

    Have tried the following

Removed the computer from the server and deleted all the old backups for that pc, uninstalled the connector software from pc, rebooted both the server and the pc.

Tried to download the connector software using IE11 but wouldn't let me, nor could I login to my netgear router (192.168.1.1) using IE11 had to use chrome which I really don't like.

Reinstalled connector software, rejoined the server, set backup etc, rebooted pc, tried a manual backup fails within 5 seconds with exact same message.

Modified the backup for the pc to only backup the main C drive , exact same issue.

As I say its only this one pc out of the other 6 that has this error all the others were upgraded to win8.1pro x64 at virtually the same time.

    Any ideas anyone?Regards

    Keith.

  • The error message is telling you that your client PC does not have enough storage space to save a volume snapshot.  Are you running out of space on your client's drive?  If so, you can use Disk Cleanup to free up more space and try again.  If not, then I'd check the client event logs to see why the volsnap process is failing.

  • I am having the same issue.  I have two drives on the computer that I am trying to backup, the first is over 50% free space and the 2nd is about 40% free.

In the error logs, there is an error for VSS

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface.  hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.

. This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process.

  • Just an update to my prior post...

I was able to identify the System Reserved as the source of the Access Denied error.  If I just choose Drives C and D, the backup happens without a problem.  It seems to be an issue with the system reserve partition although like Keith, I have other machines that were updated to 8.1 and have had no backup issues.

    Any ideas?

    Glen
