Word -Windows 2007-cannot check spelling and cannot automatically open emails RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have had Windows 2007 for a couple of years and it has worked fine. A few weeks ago I helped a friend to install the new OpenOffice (have had the older version for about 18 months and it has always worked fine along with Windows 2007) installing it myself at the same time. Since then I’ve not bee able to do the spelling check and not been able to open any email attachments (Word and Excel) as before. Now I get a box asking if I want to Seek or Save and File Type says Unknown even though I know it’s an ordinary doc or docx (same with Excel) as I’ve tried sending them to myself to test. If I chose Save I can put my document wherever I want to (and then open it) but it does not open automatically as it did before. This means that I have to save the documents regardless of knowing what they say and if I really want to save or just check them without saving. If I chose Seek I’m transferred to http://shell.windows.com/fileassoc/0409/ENFallback.asp?LangID=&EXT=doc . If I then chose Microsoft Word I’ve transferred to Word 2010 which I do not have.

So what I hope someone can help me with is 1) regain the spelling check and 2) be able to do as I did in the good old days, open my email files directly, not having to go via Save. Due to the fact that my Windows 2007 is a Student and Faculty one I can only get help from Microsoft by paying a large amount of money, SEK 2 700, which is a lot more than my copy of Windows 2007 cost and is no option.

    Best regards, Karin
