cannot connect windows 7 laptop to windows xp desktop router

  Trying to connect an Acer Windows 7 laptop to the Internet by using a Linksys Router installed on my windows xp desktop.  I keep getting the message "unable to connect".  I've trouble shooted and get the response to contact windows support.  Any suggestions??  Thank you!
