Deleting Server Backup Files RRS feed

  • Question

  • I assume that the server backup files are incremental backups. When viewing the backups in Homeserver Console, there is an option to delete backups; however the corresponding backup on the harddrive (i use an external USB Drive) is not deleted. Should the corresponding backup file on the harddrive be deleted, won't you run into trouble later if you do a restore later on as you would need all the incremental backups?  I am asking this for,  as my backup drives fill up over time, there will come a time when you need to consider deleting old backups to continue  using your existing external harddrives.

    Thank you.

That's probably because there is data in that backup that is still needed by a different backup.

Should the corresponding backup file on the harddrive be deleted

Only if there are no files from that backup that are still needed in other backups.

The WHS backup share function uses hard links.  Basically, WHS takes a complete backup of your shares whenever you run it, but if the file being backed up is identical to a file already on the backup media, it creates a hard link (shortcut) to that file in that backup (as compared to another full copy of the exact same file).
