My current hard drive in my notebook is simply to small and have
ordered a larger one. Now I would like to partition it at some point
but was wondering what happens when using WHS restore?
Does the restore perform the partitioning (it must)? Will it make just one partition, or do I shrink/partition after the restore? Any gotcha's that I should be aware of?
Normally, on a bare drive you will be prompted to create a partition. By default it will be the entire drive, but you could choose to create two partitions, as long as any partition you plan to us as a restore target is at least as large as the partition that is being restored.
One thing to be careful of is a possible hidden partition created by the computer manufacturer for purposes of system recovery, diagnostics, etc. If you have such a partition, it will usually not be formatted with NTFS, and therefore will not be backed up. This can cause boot problems. I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
