Product key already in use, Vista Home Premium, 0xC004C4A8 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi everybody,

I browsed through the answers to the problem, that the product key is not accepted, because it seems to be already in use. I tried to reactivate it via telephone, but it did not work and the person could not help me further. To better explain the problem, I will describe it now:

    1. Windows Vista home premium installed in December 2007 and activated. German Version, bought in
Austria at Mediamarkt (as we are Austrians), we currently live in Poland. Computer was bought in Moscow at an authorised dealer (where we lived before) and came with another Version of Windows, that we upgraded to Windows Vista.

    2. Automatically installed updates without any problem.

    3. Windows Vista service pack 2 installed 09.23.2009

    4. Last update installed 10.06.2009 (Definition Update for Windows Defender KB915597 Definition 1.67.379.0)

    5. Computer crashed several times within the last 3 days and I had problems to restart it.

    6. Otherwise no change in hardware or else...

Then I got the message, that I have to reactivate my Windows Vista Version, I typed in the product key and it was not accepted: Message: Product key is already in use. When I tried it via telephone, the message is: The ID seems not to match the installation ID for this computer (sorry for the translation - because it is a German version).

The person on the phone could tell me, that the product key is a valid product key (in their system), but he could not help me further. I ran my McAfee software regularily and there should not be any virus. Yesterday I tried some other things to make it work and at some point I had the message, that there was an unauthorized change on my Windows version and I had the code 0xC0020017 and the message, that the RPC Server is not available. Maybe this is part of the problem, maybe not. Unfortunately I did not track everything I did, so I can´t tell what I did that caused this message.

When I came to this forum I read everything I could find and I tried the cmp.exe procedures, the slui.exe 3 and slui.exe 4 and I called the polish activation department twice (after the restarts). They couldn´t help me either. The error messages were: online activation: The product key is already in use; activation via telephone: The ID seems not to match the ID of the installation.

As I tried everything to solve it myself I guess there must be something else, that might cause the problem so I include the MGADiagnostic Report and kindly ask you to tell me, what I can do at this point.

  • Hello Micromouse,

" I tried it via telephone as well, same result as before"

Did you talk to a Live Activation Rep? If not, try again and select the option to talk to a Live Activation Rep (if there is no option, don't enter anything in response to the Phone Prompt, this should force it to transfer you to a Live Rep.  If they are unable to resolve the Activation issue, they should transfer you to a Activation Support person.

Regarding any issues with Service Pack 2, please direct them to Vista Support page at http://support.microsoft.com/ph/11732#tab0  If the information provided does not resolve the issue, click the "Contact a support professional by E-mail, Online, or Phone" link in the upper right hand of the page.  Support for Service Pack issues is provided at no cost.

    Thank you,

  • Hello Micromouse

I believe Vista's Licensing Store is corrupt or is unreadable for some reason.
Would you try the following to recreate the Store:

    1) Open an Internet Browser

    2) Type %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.

    3) Find the file CMD.exe

    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

    5) Type: net stop slsvc  (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing

    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32

    9) Type net start slsvc

    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

    11) Reboot Twice

    12) You will likely be asked to enter a Product Key and/or Activate.

Tell us if this fixes the issue and allows you to reactivate?

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • Hi Darin,

Unfortunately it does not work. What else can I try?

  • Hi Darin,

Sorry for the short answer, but I was a bit unsettled on Saturday. Fact is, I tried to do this before and after you told me I did it again. Everything worked fine, means the licencing store was recreated, I booted twice, it asked me for the key and the result was the same. I tried it via telephone as well, same result as before. As I already said, I also tried to change the key, as described in other threads (slui.exe 3 or slui.exe 4) also without sucess.

On Saturday I paused thinking about it, but on Sunday I could not help sitting in front of the computer for some more hours. As I was fed up with SP2 I tried to uninstall it. It worked fine up to the 100% of some step 3 I guess and right when it should be done it told me, it could not unistall SP2 and it would make everything undone, means SP2 is still there. Next surprise was, that I could not enter the "Systemsteuerung" via Start button and I cannot enter the "installed updates" section. I rebooted in safe mode and tried again to uninstall SP2 as I could enter the above mentioned sections in safe mode. This too did not uninstall the SP2.

Then I thought I just reinstall Vista and get rid of all the updates Microsoft offered. I had to discover, that the SP2 also screwed up my DVD drive and when I installed the latest driver for the DVD drive it also did not work.

Result: I have a screwed DVD drive, cannot enter the "Systemsteuerung" (only through windows explorer), cannot uninstall SP2 and am completely ...

It would be really kind if you had anything else to offer.
