Another validation issue (0xC004C4A8, MSDN key) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am one of those unlucky MSDN subscribers who -- after some weeks of not using Vista -- start getting messages that Vista cannot be validated. I went to microsoft.com/genuine and got error code 0xC004C4A8. The Diagnostics Tool returns this data:

I can also reproduce this behavior with another installation with another key (also coming from MSDN). On the machine with the above debug log, no other software is installed.

    Any ideas? Thanks! :)

Did you press "Next" or Activate Now? (Though they seem the same, the buttons do very different things, however).

If this problem comes up, please let me know asap!

    Thanks,

  • Howdy chw:

It looks like it was never activated.

I suggest pressing the new "Start" button then right clicking My Computer and then Properties.

Then go to the bottom and press "Change Product Key" and put in your MSDN key. Then click NEXT (... do not click activate windows online now).

    Then you should be set.

  • Hi Phil,

strange -- after one reboot, I was actually prompted to activate my Windows. I did not choose to re-enter my product key but just clicked on "Activate Now", and it seemed to work. Thanks for your help! I wonder, though, why Vista was not activated after installation; I activated the option to activate it "now". Hopefully not too many other users will stumble upon this.
