HP MediaSmart EX470 Initial Setup Issues

Question

Hi,
First of all thanks in advance for all your help. I have purchased a EX470 couple days ago and since then I have been trying to get through the setup process. These things are supposed to be turn-key solutions, I started to believe I have been missing something and wanted to get your help.
Let me first explain my home network;
Internet Connection: Cable via Motorola modem connected to the primary router
Primary Router: Linksys WRT610N
Secondary Router: Linksys WRT310N (connected to the primary router's to expand the network, DHCP disabled)
WHS: HP MediaSmart EX470 - Connected to Primary router via wired network (Default configuration, no additional drives or memory, yet)
Primary PC: Vista Ultimate x64 connected to primary router via wired connection
Secondary PC (Laptop): Vista Home Premium x86 connected to primary router via wireless N connection
I started to try the setup from the secondary PC as Home Server does not support Vista x64 right out of the box (let me know if there is a way without involving an x86 PC at all for future reference at first setup. I know it is possible once the servers is setup)
I tried to install the setup disc and when it comes to the connector installation, it keeps quitting saying an error occurred, try again later. Only options you have is back and cancel. When you hit back, it tries again, when you hit cancel, it uninstalls the connector.
I have tried the setup with two EX470s and they both had the same problem. I have also tried the setup from an XP machine, too, it is the same situation.
I checked the network and I can see the "HPSERVER" in the computers list and I can ping it just fine. When I double-click on it, it asks for the admin password but just because it is not setup yet, I don't know what the default password would be? If I could do an MSTSC session I can troubleshoot more but no luck. Web server is not working I believe due to the server not being setup yet.
Lights in the front is purple for the health indicator and the hard drive indicating that the HDD needs initial setup.
I am administrator on both machines and I don't get any blocking messages from Norton or Windows firewall. Windows Firewall tried to block the connection when I first tried on Vista x86 but I said unblock and ran the setup again.
I believe, it can find the server but for some reason it can not connect to it. Because, if it wasn't able to connect, it would complain about not being able to find the home server.
I have also tried downloading the 1.3 update and running that one and it is still the same problem. In the middle of the installation it says, it can't connect to web server, I say ignore, continues the installation and when it comes to the connector installation, the same issue.
I have also tried the Toolkit and it shows me bunch of things but none of which points to a solution and they are more pointing to the Home Server not being setup just yet which is obvious and don't require a toolkit to figure.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I am quite knowledgeable about computers but this device left me clueless.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,

There are 2 things that grab my attention here.
Even though you have DCHP disabled, perhaps the secondary router is the problem. Could you temporarily remove it from your network? If it is the problem, you could replace it with a simple switch.
Do you have 2 firewalls running (Norton & Windows)? That almost always causes difficulties.
I'm sure others here will have more helpful things for you to try, but this is a start.

Looks like there is some problem in your network configuration. Did try disconnecting your cable modem from the router?
- Disconnect the Motorola & secondairy router
- Restart Linksys.
- Restart EX470.
- Start Windows XP client.
- Disable Norton/Windows firewall.
- Run the WHS Connecter installer....

Thanks a lot for the reply... I will try it for sure when I get back home. But just to explain, the secondary router is not only multiplyign the ports avilable in another room, it also proivdes a secondary wireless network with a different SSID. That is the reason why I have the secondary router, Wired PCs are on the first router, PS3, another PC, Wii etc are on that secondary router both wired and wireless.
As per the firewalls, I have the Norton Antivirus 2009 and I beleive it does a little bit of spyware checking etc. I don't have the Norton Internet Security or anything. Windows Firewall itself is running by default. I can perhaps disable that and retry.
BTW, I just remembered, I have tried the install also with disabling all Norton services as well, that didn't make any difference but I didn't disable Windows Firewall before.

Just in case the culprit does turn out to be the 2nd router, you could replace it with a WAP and get your 2nd wireless network.Friday, February 27, 2009 9:24 PM

I sure will try unplugging the second router and the Modem and see how it goes. If it is really the second router, that is goign to be interesting for sure. Everything gets their IP address from the first router includign the wired and wireless devices conencted to the router #2.
BTW, what is the default administrator password for the WHS? Is it preset or it is not set until it is configured for the first time?

You will make your life easier if you assign a static address to the WHS in the router. Also, I recently solved a home networking problem by assigning a static address to the Wii.
I believe the WHS password gets set up upon completion of installation. Again, if you want to make life easier, it should get the same password you use on your PC. And, if you want to do remote access, you'll want a "strong" password. You'll see what that means.

I have actually set those IPs within the router (Or let's say I have reserved certin IPs to certain MAC IDs so HP Home Server gets its own IP already. It saves a headache for sure :)) already but I can do the same by each computer on the network, too.
I am dyign to go home and try the solutions you guys have submitted. Hopefully, it will workout.

One other thing, until the intital setup is completed, that drive light stays purple, right? I am thinking about adding couple more drives and should wait until the intial setup is completed or go ahead?
Also, in WHS, what happens if the first drive fails? Is it the one hosting the WHS? Wht happens to the data on the other drives?

Now that you've started installation, you should probably finish it & then add the new drives. But don't copy any data to the server until you've got the new drives working.
Your question about what happens if the first drive fails is not a quick subject to address here. You need to read the documentation you have, plus peruse here:
plus search this forum

You guys rock. Thanks a lot. After unhooking the second router it worked. I will try to hook-up the second router again and see what happens then updat the post for other users.
Thanks a million!Saturday, February 28, 2009 5:12 AM
