How do I add an already full hard drive? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I plan on using a new 500GB Hard Drive as the system drive and installing the server software on it. After installation is complete I want to add other Hard Drives to the system. These other drives already have data saved on them.

What's the best method to add these drives/move data to the new WHS?

  • When you add a drive to the storage pool, Windows Home Server will format it. You can't, therefore, use WHS to share out data from it outside of WHS management.

The recommended way to add one or more drives that are full to start with is to make sure that there's enough room for the contents on that drive available on the server. Then connect the drive to the server, but don't use the console to add it to the storage pool. Next, copy the files off of it to the network shares on the server. Finally, add the drive to the storage pool.
