Getting windows not genuine after rebuild from OEM supplied DVD's. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

    I had to rebuild my daughters laptop about 3 weeks ago using the supplied recovery disks, eveerything went fine and I gave her laptop back to her. Now all of a sudden it is Now complaining that Vista is not genuine (black bacgroud etc.)

    Given I installed it from the OEM supplied DVD's I know its genuine, unfortunatly the windows vista license key sticker on the bottom of the laptop is worn away and I can only read the last few digits they are ....WXRY

    below is the output from WGA

    All I can say is I will not buy a new product key for Vista as asked for by the machine, given I spent £400 on this laptop for my daughter less that 2 years ago, and Microsoft have made it so dificult to work things out.

    All I want is what I have paid for a Windoews vista home premium license for the product.

    Home someone can help

    Regards Andrew

  • That's a good question - to which I don't know the answer :(

    Ringing TechGuy support may be a good idea at this point - they may have access to the COA Key, or be able to advise an alternative way to get the machine running poperly wthout the expense of a new license.

    The operative bit of your MGADiag report is

    OEM Activation 2.0 Data-->
    BIOS valid for OA 2.0: yes, but no Windows marker
    Windows marker version: N/A
    OEMID and OEMTableID Consistent: yes

    and your current BIOS is

    <Manufacturer>Phoenix Technologies LTD</Manufacturer>
    <Version>1.01</Version>
    <SMBIOSVersion major="2" minor="5"/>
    <Date>20080917000000.000000+000</Date>

    HTH - and Good Luck with Dixons!

  • Your machine is an Advent 6441 with BluRay - from Dixons?

    ONLY if that's the case, then try updating the BIOS to v1.02

    http://support.thetechguys.com/bluray6441

    This may resolve the problem - which is that for some reason Windows is unable to self-activate using the BIOS you currently have. This could be because of a BIOS update, or because of file corruptions in either the BIOS or the OS.

    Assuming that the new BIIOS contains the correct data, then it should be capapble of self-activation using the OEM SLP key from the manufacturer's installation disks (which is the key you are currently using)

    Failing that, then you MAY be able to get your COA Key from the manufacturer - if so, then use that

  • Noel

    Yes the machine is a Advent 6441 but without the BluRay just a standard CD/DVD writer and yes it was from Dixons

    Are the intrustions to update the BIOS still relevent.
