Cannot see forums previously selected with the View all lists RRS feed

  • Question

  • A few days ago I reported a problem whereby I could not clear my selection of Windows forums

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/4afa5f6f-d542-4735-97b4-9c098ad73dec/cannot-clear-forums-selection?forum=reportabug

I continue to make that selection regularly and now have the opposite problem. Those same forums have disappeared - they no longer appear in the View all lists for selection, nor can I see any threads from those forums when I select forum home (view all forums). Last time the explanation was that somehow the URL in my shortcut had changed. This time I have checked that and it is unchanged:

     https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?

However, I tried another approach - I searched Technet Forums and clicked the link in the search results. Edge opened as the default browser - with all the Windows forums correctly listed!

Addendum: I just noticed that when Edge opened correctly the URL was

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home

However, the social.msdn URL is the one Dave Patrick was expecting when he answered my earlier question.

As before this problem is limited to Edge - I can view the forums correctly in IE11 or other browsers using my regular shortcuts.

Any suggestions for a fix would be welcome.

  • Thank you both for explaining that there are two different versions of the forums which I had not previously understood. I can now see that the Windows forums of most interest are in ".technet." and not ".msdn.".

However, this leaves an apparent issue with the current implementation of Edge.

I mentioned in my first thread that the problem had arisen without any deliberate change to the Edge favourite link that I use every day. The situation is exactly the same this time. Yet this problem has only arisen recently. I do not remember whether it was the ".technet." or the ".msdn." URL but I have used Edge with a single, unchanging (by me) favourites link for Technet since moving to Windows 10 several years ago. During that time this issue never arose - the first time I noticed it was a week or two before my first thread.

I upgraded this PC to Ver 1803 shortly before that and the obvious inference is that the issue has arisen as a result of a change to the implementation of Edge.

    Hi :-)

    >> hat there are two different versions of the forums

Actually there are more then two. It is well explained in the link I gave you. The post in the MSDN Forum Ninja gives examples of three different URLs.

     >> However, this leaves an apparent issue with the current implementation of Edge.

I do not use Edge. I do not recommend to use Edge as well.

This is why we have Chrome portable, without any installation directly from my Disk-On-key ;-)

    >> Regarding the previous issue, as I mentioned above, simple clearing the browser cache, cookies, and so on should solve it

I use Edge browser every day and am also at Windows 10 1803 but have never had an issue with shortcuts or favorites changing like this. I'd probably ask over here to see if other experience the issue.

(these tools may also help understand favorites issue but I'd still ask in Edge forum)

  • When you add forum tiles to the left pane from the View All and Submit then you should also see the URL change with the new selections. Then you can save this as a favorite or a shortcut so you can get back to the same list of forum tiles. There's also the Quick Access\My Forums but for me the favorites or shortcut method is far superior.

The MSDN branding and TechNet branding produce a different View All list of forums. MSDN being geared more towards development and TechNet geared to IT Pro discussions. Also note that there is some cross over (forums that exist in both) There's also (plus others not mentioned)

    MSDN https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?

    TechNet https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home

    No brand https://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home

    Good day misar,

    >>  have checked that and it is unchanged:  https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?... I just noticed that when Edge opened correctly the URL was https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home...

    1. MSDN (https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home) and TechNet (https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home) are two different interfaces.

Some forums exists in both like this forum, which you can get using each of the links below:
    https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=reportabug
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=reportabug

But some of the forums includes in specific interface

Therefore, in these two home pages you do not see the exact same threads. Some threads included in both and some not.

    2. If you clear your browser cache, cookies then you reset all and you will get the default again. Just remember to use the write link in the right interface (I prefer the MSDN interface design but if you use a forum which is only in the TechNet then you cannot use the MSDN link)

for more information about the forum's URL you can read this post:
    https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/forumninjas/forums-url-format/

My apologies. I forgot that some readers demand terminological exactitude. What I should have said was "thank you for explaining that I have been viewing two different versions of the forums".

I am perfectly capable thank you of identifying the option to use another browser and actually mentioned two in my first thread on this topic. However, I happen to like Edge and was interested to find out what is going on. I still am.

    Thank you again.

A fair point but I view many other web sites on a regular basis (using favourites). I am puzzled as to why I have experienced a problem only with Technet (and its related sites).

One distinction comes to mind now that you have explained the setup. I have not previously come across forums where identical forums from a very large collection may or may not be found on one or more of several apparently independent sites with distinct URLs.

  • Hi misar.

Since other people use the same configuration as you are with no issue, I can only assume that this is related to the client side. I asked you several times to clean the browser information like cache and cookies. I do not see any respond to this point and I don't know if you tried this, therefore I will recommend again to do so :-)

If this does not work then Please try in the first link Dave gave in the message above edge_history-edge_win10 maybe they will have answer.
