NTFS Compression RRS feed

  • Question

  •

So the WHS help file says this:

    Unsupported server storage file types
The following file types are not supported on Windows® Home Server server storage:

    Files with external attributes

    Reparse points

    Encrypted files (file system level)

    Compressed files (file system level)

And MS says this on their website:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/950190/en-us

So is it the case that the help file is just not correct, or do I need to uncompress all folders on client machines?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Alex,
the help file is not related to the client backups, but to files, which you store in the Shared folders, means you cannot go and try to apply attributes on file system level to files in folders belonging to the storage pool of the server. An example for such attempts would be to keep all videos in the Videos share, but have a subfolder for adult videos and trying to protect this subfolder separately. This will not work (or at least not reliable).
The KB article you found described a now fixed bug in handling of compressed client files duing backup.

  • Windows Home Server Storage is referring to the home server shares. The KB Article is concerning an issue (which has been solved long time ago) with backup of NTFS compressed files on a client, so two unrelated issues. No need to uncompress NTFS compressed folders on clients (if you have all updates installed)

How old is the help file? Is this the one which came with the original OEM install disk (without PowerPack 1)?

If yes please look for more recent documentation overhere.

AFAIK the issue with Extended attributes has also been cleared.

Concerning Compression / Encyption, the shares do not support file system Compression or Encryption (Right click file in share, Click Advanced on General Tab to open Advanced Attributes). The WHS file system does not store the actual file in the shared folder, it only leave a reparsepoint. Please read Drive Extender for more details on WHS storage.

  • Olaf: Thanks for that.  I didn't deduce that from the help file, and I appreciate your answer a lot.

Brubber: Thanks.  As far as I know the help file is the most recent.  The install is PP1 with all updates applied.  You can search for the keyword 'compressed' in the help file to see the page I was referring to.  It wasn't clear to me that the NTFS compressed file limitation referred to the network shares and not client files.

    Thanks.
