update 3.1 and update agent fail to install (win xp sp2) after xp repair from restore disc

I use Windows Automatic Update to install my updates. Just recently, it

I recently had to restore my Xp SP2 from the restore disc and tried to register the wups2.dll from the command line(which showed as successful), but I still cannot run update 3.1 or the update agent.

Your question about Windows Update is not related to Windows Genuine Advantage so it is off-topic to this forum.
BTW, I find that "Dial-a-fix" v.60 works wonders for getting Windows Updates problems ironed out. :-) Visit your favorite search engine and search on Dial-a-fix.
