Problem downloading Outlook Backup pfbackup.exe

Question
-
I have just finished downloading August's MS downloads for XP Pro and Office 2007 (all 56MB of them) and they have installed fine. I then decided to finally sort out my Outlook problems where I have over the years lost all my addresses etc because I hadn't kept a proper backup. I decided to download the Outlook Backup file (pfbackup.exe) from the Microsoft Download site and as part of that excercise it asked that I install the WGA file which has been loaded on many previous occasions for other downloads. This time however when I click the continue button following the WGA installation I can only get to a page which tells me that it cannot find what I am looking for and the page appears to be headed Downloads Hand Off aspa. Has anyone any idea what is happening here.

Gordon,
Thank you for taking time and posting back. Honestly I am sorry for what you have experienced regarding the non-genuine Office you purchased in Thailand. Please know Microsoft is not a monster nor responsible. There are many many malicious individuals as well as stores who sell non-genuine software daily. The Windows Genuine Advantage program was established to protect YOU as our valued customer. First I highly encourage you to please file a piracy report. This will aid in thwarting future piracy efforts. Please visit http://www.howtotell.com . You will find the following link on the left side http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/ . Please take the time to research through the How To Tell site which will explain how you can prevent this from happening again in the future. Also you can purchase software straight from Microsoft. Please follow the steps for filing the piracy report and you may be eligible to receive a free copy of Microsoft Office. Again I am sorry to hear what you have experienced Gordon.
Thank you,
Stephen Holm, MS

Hi Stephen
I have done as you ask and filed a report. I have given as much information as I can remember about my purchase but it was a long time ago. Thailand is a cash society, as using cards costs you so much more, so I don't even have that line as a fallback to finding the culprit. I have also sent Microsft my personal details, which was not as easy as it looks as the site rejects legitimate UK postal codes, so I hope your heavy mob don't come knocking on my door. Joke Stephen. The original computer is now sold as was the printer/scanner combo. I wiped the hard drive before I left as it had lots of my personal information and teaching aids on it. I sold it with Windows XP Home which also came with it as well as the other disks which came as a package. I brought Office back with me as I paid extra for that and it worked great. It doesn't work so well with my older PC but I'm now used to its new format. I still don't have the Outlook backup file which started this all off but such is life these days.
Maybe you might like to extradite me as well.

gordonbraid,
It looks like the download for the pfbackup.exe is fine, as it was successfully downloaded and installed on a machine.
I would try to look in the settings of your browswer, be it Firefox or Internet Explorer. Just for the heck of it, use IE7 if
you hadn't before and see if that works.
You can also try to reset the IE7 settings to the default settings and try to install it again.
It doesn't look like a validation issue but if you're concerned, you can run the msdiag tool here at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.
I hope this helps,

Hi Lori MS
I tried everything that you suggested but I still cannot download the pfbackup.exe file. I went to the MS Download site in IE 7 which I do use quite often and identified the files I wished. All my settings in IE7 are at default. I click continue and it then asks me to load the WGA software which it does do and then it takes me to a page where it says ...to complete we need you to provide some additional information. It asks me to click Continue to complete the process and when I do it takes me to a page which says "We are sorry, the page you requested cannot be found see below for search results close to your request or try a new search." This page also shows this Downloaded Hand Off aspa which means nothing to me. I then ran the link you suggested and clicked the Windows tab which tells me that the software is Genuine 0 whatever that means among other details which showed my registration number etc. I then clicked the copy box and loaded the file here as you asked. I have tried again several times to download and I end up at the same cannot be found page. I have recently had problems with Automatic updates but they now seem resolved as all 16 (12 for Windows and 4 for Office) loaded perfectly earlier today.

Gordonbraid,
First your windows is genuine. Next I noticed you are running a blocked Volumne Licensing Key (VLK) of Office. Can you send me the actual URL of the page you first visit before it sends you to the next page. Please let us know all the steps you took and all links etc so we may check them.Thank you,
Stephen Holm

Hi Stephen,
I have spent much of today trying to figure out what the report I posted actually says. I'm just an old retired guy with time on his hands and so I have done some research today mostly on the internet. On my initial look at the report I quickly passed bye the Blocked VLK bit as it meant nothing to me and my eyes went to the bit at the end which said genuine results for Office. However today following my research I gradually began to fathom out what the Blocked VLK refered to and my worst fears were realised. I had bought a pig in a poke.
Following my retirement from a large UK Organisation some years ago I did a little bit of Consultancy work with some other large organisations within the UK and slowly made myself a little computer literate. However about 3 years ago I got rather board with what we call "borrowing other people's watches to tell them the time" and looked for something new in my retiral years. I have a lot of Thai friends in the UK and made a brief trip out there as a guest of one and loved it so much I went back shortly afterwards for another stay. Resulting from this I decided to do some English teaching and I enrolled for my TESFL qualification as a college in Bangkok. After gaining this qualification I took a contract for 1 year teaching English in a very good organisation. I did this year in two six months blocks with a return to the UK in between. I bought myself a computer out there and part of the deal got me this Version of Office at a good price as I was a teacher. I was assured that there was a large discount for approved teachers but it still cost me the equivlent of £60. It was purchased in the main computer area of Bangkok called Pantip which is famous for all its computer shops. I have never had any trouble with it until yesterday and I really thought I had a genuine copy as the disk is very good, but what do I knowabout these things. After 15 months I came back to the UK and brought the disk with me and installed it on my older PC here. Again I never had any problems until a couple of weeks ago when I got a new and larger hard drive installed and I did a fresh re install of all my programs. I had to do it twice as I had initial problems with SP3 but finally I got my PC up and running again which to be honest amazed me somewhat. I still had problems installing automatic updates for Windows and Office. I managed to download everything but nothing would install. I got help in my computer magazine's help forum and finally everything worked. Even SP1 for Office just flew on as did all 16 updates from a couple of days ago. I put all my problems down to SP3 which was probably right as many others have had similar problems.
My one big problem was that I have lost most of my Outlook Contacts during my travels as I could never find where the files were kept and on reading about this automatic backup program I decided to give it a go. I should add that the only bits of Office I use are Word, and Powerpoint (when you are teaching to users of another language pictures are worth a thousand words) and Outlook only for the contacts. I use Hotmail for all my mail. I don't know how to use any of the other bits of Office although I do know what excel does but I haven't a clue what the rest do.
Anyway despite buying this at not too cheap a price as part of my Thai Computer (which I left behind) and purchasing it from what I thought was a reliable source I now begin to think that perhaps I didn't. If I am right about this then I am amazed that it has worked fine for almost 2 years now. I have managed to get it up to date 3 times, once in Bangkok and twice here doing everything through the proper Microsoft Automatic and downloading sites and I am 100% positive that it has gone through this validation program many times before without any problems. To be perfectly honest I have no idea why I keep Office up to date as it is a program I never use on the Internet so it shouldn't suffer from the security problems whiich are often highlighted. It is just something I do because to be frank I am bored and it is something to do.
I know I may be sounding a little defeatest about this as I may indeed have a proper copy but I am also a realist who has spent much of the past day or two learning about things which frankly scare me. What I do now I have no idea as I fully intend to return to Bangkok in the next few monthsand continue my voluntary teaching as it has given me something to do with my life which I find rewarding. I have been using Powerpoint to prepare what I hope will be stimulating lessons as preparation is 60% of teaching. I am assuming here that you are someone from the big monster Microsoft and not just another helpful poster on a help forum as was no doubt Lori before you.On hindsight it seems like I was led like a lamb to the slaughter. I don't really want to go through everything again. I went to the Official Microsoft Download site and type in "Outlook Backup" and hit enter. It came up with two items and I followed the top link which took me to the download site for the file in question. I hit continue and then it told me it needed to do a Validation check before I could download the pfbackup.exe file. A file appeared and I hit run as it was a Microsoft file and then it came up with another page which told me that to complete the process I needed to provide some additional information with a Contunue button below. As I thought I had nothing to fear I hit the Continue button which them took me to a page which says in large lettering across the top "WE are sorry, the page you requested cannot be found, see below for search results close to your request or try a new search." This page was basically a dead. I tried this many times with the same reult each time.
As I had found in recent days my PC Magazine helpline to be helpful with my other problems I decided to try Microsoft help files for this and somehow or other I ended up in this forum. Every program on my PC is a good one or so I thought until yesterday. They are either proper bought copies or free downloads from my PC magazine. As I say I am now an infrequent home user with a 6 year old computer which is barely keeping going but it is good enough for me. I had a perfectly good registered copy of Office Pro XP which again was good enough for me but I nevertheless went for what was current when I bought my new PC in Bangkok.
What do you suggest I do now?

Hi Stephen
One week on and nothing happening. What do I do now or do you know what happens next?
GordonWednesday, August 20, 2008 6:41 PM -
Well I guess that was a waste of time and effort reporting on the MS site as suggested. Nothing has happened and I'm in limbo. So much for honesty.Monday, September 1, 2008 6:43 PM

Gordonbraid,
Unfortunately this will take some time. As for how much time I am not actually for sure. Please have patients. There are probably many piracy reports reported. Your report will be analyzed and feedback will be provided. Take care Gordon and please know that the time you took will help you and countless others globally.
Again thank you,

Gordonbraid,By accident I came across this forum looking for some info on backing up Outlook. My eye was caught by the sheer size of your post and I read your whole story...You mentioned you bought a genuine Office copy in a shop in Pantip Plaza in Bangkok. Now this is the thing... I have lived and worked in Bangkok for the last 6 years and it is common knowlegde that Pantip Plaza is (in)famous for being the biggest shopping center for computer electronics hardware and software in Thailand. It is even mentioned in most travel guides as the best place to find the biggest collection of illegal copies of music cd's, dvd's and software cd's.It would be in my opinion safe to say that 99% of the shops in Pantip that sell any kind of music, movies or software on either CD or DVD, exclusively sell 100% ILLEGAL copies. In other words; the chance of finding any form of legit software there is close to ZERO.Now back to the lines where you stated you assumed you were buying a genuine copy of a software program in this particular place, after having lived and worked in BKK for 1 year...At the risk of sounding a bit harsh, I cannot but wonder at this point if you are:A) Taking the piss with serious people who are doing a serious job trying to assist you?!ORB) Completely ignorant and one of those over-aged, over-weight guys that sits in a gogobar, listening to some 18 year old girl telling them how handsome he is, assuming she must be telling the truth, and with that he must be God's gift to women?!Having said that... are you sure that you didn't by any chance receive your TESFL qualification from one of the 'shops' in Khaosan Road that sell m for a few Euro per copy (exactly how 50% of the other English teachers in Thailand got them...)In the land of smiles nothing is what is seems, but everything is what you want it to be...If I am wrong about any of this, hell.."I'm sorry", but if the bets are 100:1 you can't blame a guy for taking a bet....Good luck..!SergioFriday, November 7, 2008 8:17 PM
