WHS system does not backup after installing KB 981089 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Like others on this forum, my WHS system has been up and running fine for the last month, today I found the system running after a reboot due to KB 981089. WHS system stated update OK, but all PC that are attached show the same red colored icon stating to install thye updated connector SW. No luck, would not install. Troubleshooter was used and did submit the logs tp Microsoft. There seems to be some networking issues (??), nothing has changed in hardware nor software (except the update). All PC's show the same issue. Uninstalling and re-installing the Troubleshooter did not resolve the issue, and I can't install the WHS connector SW. Any clues or solutions?

  • Add the user IIS_WPG to the Home Server WINDOWS\TEMP folder security and set to Full Control.

    Worked for me!

  • Backup does not work is due to the client connector need upgrade. If you can't upgrade via click the WHS red tray icon. Try uninstall the connector from your client and re-install via http://yourservername:55000.

  • I tried to upgrade by clicking the WHS red tray icon. The client loaded the connector SW from my home server and started to install, but it failed to do so: internal server error and 'please try again later'. On one of my other PC's I installed the WHS ConnectorTroubleshooter SW from Microsoft. Ran the program and found that one of the 35 tests failed ....... The failing test is found in section [4] Windows Home Server Connector test number 16. This test 'Partner manager simulator' fails as follows: it start by calling the PMSimulator.exe using Msxml2.ServerXMLHTTP6.0 and reports:

    URL: http://SERVER:55000/Enrollld/ld.aspx

    HTTP STATUS=200

    HTTP STATUS:OK

Than the server responded with 2824 bytes (Certificate). and after the certificate it comes back with

    URL: http://SERVER:56000/Enrollld/ld.aspx

    HTTP STATUS=500

    HTTP STATUS:Internal Server Error

Note: this PC still has the original WHS Connector SW installed .... (otherwise there would be more error in section [5] of the 35 tests.

I get the feeling that there is something wrong with some of the WHS software that controls the IIS either corrupt or wrong version. But that could be the effect of the installation of update 981089, as the WHS Server has been running smoothly and uninterrupted for 4 weeks. Any clues?

  • I was a little suprized to execute this suggestion (folder WINDOWS\TEMP on my WHS is empty. But anyway I gave it a try ...... I have re-installed the WHS Connector SW on some of teh PC's and hurrah the connector installs and is operational. Made backups and it is working OK as before.

Note: one of the PC's was in the state as prior to the WHS server update, I turned it on and I did not had to install the connector SW.

Looks like that during the automatic update process some directory attributes were removed or not re-instated.

Thanks for your suggestion Vox Associates.

  • Later today I realized that I tried to install WHS Connector onto another PC some months ago, but that never succeeded .... I looked up my notes and found that the behavior on this client was exeactly the same as I experienced just recently (see my other messages). So I fired up this PC, hooked it up to the network and started to install the WHS connector SW and guess what ...... it completed its installation and I was able to make a backup to the server.

My conclusion: after the installation of the update 981089, it became apparent that the WHS Connector software had a problem to install on clients in a similar way as a few month ago ....Most likely the problem I had encountered all those month ago was there and became clear after the excercise of this week. All in all the update this week did not cause the problem, it was already sleeping on the server.

Problem solved and even more .... Thanks again.

PS: are there more users like IIS_WPG that run on the Home Server that need for instance the same Full Control setting to a folder in the WINDOWS directory other than the WINDOWS\TEMP folder?
