can not connect client RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have 5 clients on my home network, last week I had to rebuild my Home Server due to a motherboad problem.  All has gone well apart from when i come to add my clients on to the server 4 went fine then I came to the last one my wifes laptop, when I go to add the use name and pasword in the user profile it seems ok but when I try to access the server it says im using the wrong user name and or password.

Please help wife is doing my head in on this one.

    Many Thanks

  • Is the guest account on the server enabled? If so, disable it.
On the Windows 7 client ensure, that file and printer sharing is enabled. (Network and Sharing Center/Choose Homegroup and Sharing Options/Change Advanced Sharing Settings/Turn on file and printer sharing.)
Does it help to add the home server IP address and name to the hosts file in Windows\system32\drivers\etc on the client? (Open notepad per rightclick / As Administrator to get the permission to save the file later.) That would be a workaround only and cause trouble, if the IP address of the server changes.
(Only in case, the client resolves to a wrong machine somewhere in the Internet with the DNS settings in your home. To check this, you can also attempt to ping your server, does that resolve properly to the internal address or is an external address listed?)

  • At last I have it sorted and working , Thanks Olaf you gave me the clue.  When I reinstalled the server I changed its IP address and yes the old ip address for the old server was in the Host file, I have changed that now and all is fine,   What and idiot i feel I should have seen that.

    Many Thanks

  • Thanks for the pointer but still not working :-( It just does not make sence short of reformat of laptop witch is 101% out of the question i cant see an answear.

when i type in \\server in the 'run' prompt the answear i get is the "windows security" box asking for password, i type it in and then i get "logon failure; unknown user name or bad password" yet the user name and password are the same as the server, 1 thing that i do see that is odd is i get this as the user name "fiona-laptop\fiona" now the laptop is called "fiona-laptop" and the user is fiona, this may be a hint but cant see where i can change that.

    Thanks for any help

  • Out of curiosity, did you try going to your remote site from the laptop?  Like https://yourname.homeserver.com, I mean.  And did you try logging in with the username and password there?

If that works, then I would suggest downloading the connector software and reinstalling it on the laptop.  IIRC, anytime you upgrade or rebuild the server, you have to redownoad and reinstall the connector software (although I could be wrong on this).

    Have a great day:)

  • Ian,

If you did not allready, please try the following for the laptop:

    * Uninstall the Windows Home server Connector
    * Restart the laptop
    * Re-install the Windows Home server Connector through http://{your-server-name}:55000

  • Ian,
From the laptop, can you connect to the 'public' shared folder?
If not:  please check out the suggestions from Olaf's post.

If you *do* have access to the public folder my guess would be that somehow the Server access settings to the shares got mixed up for this user. To resolve try this using the WHS console: remove the user, restarting the server, re-add the user using the identical name and password as used to login-on to the laptop. Restart the laptop.
