Office 2007 is suddenly "not genuine" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am going round in circles - Microsoft Office Basic 2007 is suddenly reporting as not genuine and the web pages aren't helping with anything specific. On the forums there is regular mention of a mgadiag report, but I don't know how to run this.

    Can someone help so I can get to the bottom of this?

    Thanks.

  • Hello Griffimh,

    Media Licensing Kits (MLK) are an OEM license not a Volume Licence.

     Your Microsoft Office Word 2007 was installed using an Invalid Volume License Key (VLK).  Invalid means the key was generated using a Pirating Tool called a Key Generator (KeyGen) as far as Office knows, the KeyGen keys key look and acts just like a normal VLK but it was not created or sold by Microsoft.

     Your Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 was installed using a Volume License Key that had become leaked to the internet.  The Orginization that owned the key informed Microsoft of the leak (or Microsoft detected the leak) and with the key owner's permission, Microsoft Blocked the key.

    At this point, we want to confirm that the Vendor, in fact, sold you Genuine or Non-Genuine software.  To do that, follow the below three steps.

    1) First thing is to uninstall the Non-Genuine software.

    2) Reboot

    3) Since it's possable that you may have had your PC worked on (or a friend 'Upgraded' your Office) and the repair guy (or the friend) may have reinstalled Office using a Non-Genuine key from the internet (instead of contacting you for the proper key) I recommend reinstalling the Office using the Product Keys sold to you by the Vendor.

       Once you have reinstalled the Office using the Product Key sold to you by the Vendor, re-run the MGA Diagnostic Tool again. and paste the report into Notepad.  Look at the lines under "OGA Data-->".

    -If the Office shows invalid or bloked VLKs then you know that the vendor sold you piracted software and I Highly recommend contacting them and demanding the Genuine Microsoft Software, that you paid for, or at least a refund.  I also recommend sumitting a Piracy Report at http://www.microsoft.com/piracy

    -If the Office shows as Genuine then you know that the Vendor sold you Genuine Microsoft Software.  In this case, I don't know how or why those Invalid and Blocked keys got used to install your Office, but as I mentioned, the most common way is thru a repair guy being lazy or a well meaning friend not knowing they were doing anything wrong.

    I hope that helps,
    Darin MS

    It looks like I have been sold a volume license key, but can you confirm? Then I can go back to the vendor with the correct explanation.

    Although if I look at my license kit, it definitely says "MLK" on the sticker on the back, so how do I check my license key for Office on the laptop? The website only seems to tell me how to check Windows license key, which is fine.

  • Hey Griffimh.

    These are the following lines from your report, that says you are using a "Volume License Key"
    ===============================
    OGA Data-->
    Office Status: 108 Invalid VLK
    Microsoft Office Word 2007 - 108 Invalid VLK
    Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 - 103 Blocked VLK
    ===============================

    Altought im not sure on how these MLK partners license work. So i think you should try first, asking the vendor.

    Or else, see what "Carey Frisch" say about that.

    See ya.

  • Darin,

    Thanks, but is there no way to just update the license key? I have an MLK so no 'media' to reinstall from. I am really reluctant to just unistall the software and potentially cause all sorts of problems - surely there must be a way to just update the license key?

    Can you help?
