Drive just stopped RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all, right I have a strange one here. My WHS has been acting funny since sometime yesterday, I was getting a few Conflicts due to a I/O error, and I was sorting them out all day today when suddenly one of my HDDs stopped working, is still powers up but cant get it to show up in either WHS or Windows 7, and when I connect it to sata on my server my WHS locks up, its one of the first drives I had put in, so it may have a few things not backed up yet, is there anyway I can get the drive to work or is there nothing I can do?

  • Nothing strange about what you're seeing, you have a failed hard drive.

If the data on it is critical, "can't lose" stuff, you can send the drive out to a specialist for data recovery. This will be very expensive, and they will not guarantee 100% recovery; success will depend on what's wrong with the drive. If you think you may want to go this route, you should not attempt recovery efforts yourself. (Depending on what's wrong with the drive, attempting to recover data yourself may further damage the drive.)

If the data is less critical, you can try a tool such as Spinrite, drive manufacturer's test and repair tools, etc. Again, depending on what's wrong, these tools may not be able to correct any issues.

You can also try the "home remedy" of freezing the drive: place the drive in a sealed bag and put it in your freezer for a while (net.wisdom varies widely on the proper amount of time). Then, while it's still very cold, connect it back up to a computer and try to get anything still on it off, starting with the most important files. Your window will be pretty narrow, if this works at all, and I'm told by my acquaintances in the data recovery field that you will make it more difficult for a recovery specialist to recover data by doing this, and that "... the success rate is not stellar."

As for what you do on your server, shut it down, disconnect the drive, restart your server, and remove the "missing" drive. Accept any warnings regarding data loss, as your recovery effort will not be implemented on the server.

    Good luck, you'll need it...

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Thanks for the reply Ken

Before I decide, is there anyway to frind out what is missing of the server, which would be the contents of the hdd, this would let me know if the info on it is critical or not.

As for the drive, I had no warnings that it was failing, I was just sorting out the server and then it stopped.

Ken what is your input on the way forward.

You could try using the WHS Cleanup Tool written by catsaver (another WHS user).  It goes through and looks for tombstones that point to files that are no longer available.  Note that A) using it unsupported, B) it will only work if the tombstones for non-duplicated files are still on the primary drive (which will only be true if you haven't removed the drive through the Console), and C) it may give "false positives" if the tombstone is pointing to a missing primary shadow (even though the alternate shadow is still on another drive in the server).

  • I havent removed the drive yet, as I still dont know how it happened, like I said there was no warning, by WHS, it just died., so I will try thing Cleanup tool, then I will have to try and figure out what to do after that, if anyone knows the best course of action.

  • Right had a go with the cleanup tool it had to be on all night, there is a huge list of everything that was on my drives, its going to take forever to sort through it. My drive on the other hand when I connect it up keeps freezing and unfreezing WHS.

  • Why not try to connect it to another PC and see if you can recover any data off it that way, it could be anything from the leads that you are using to the ports on the MOBO as to why it is not working, worth trying
