Now have two copies of folders to be synced (Mac Os X) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi
have set up Live Mesh on two computers (Macs). When I ran it for first time on the second computer the synced folders appeared on my desktop. So I now have two copies and my desktop is cluttered. Is there a way of merging the two copies of the folders ?

    TIA

  • Hi John,

Do you mean two folders with the same contents? If so, you could just backup the extra copies and just use the mesh ones.

If you mean you're getting links as well as the real folders then what you need to do, is go through each folder separately and sync it to your machine, specifying the existing folder as the target of the sync. Live Mesh will then merge the two and you should have only one copy.

Let us know if that helps,

  • I marked Oren's post as the answer for the question.
Basically, the setup of the sync on multiple machines can be confusing due to the fact that any folders added to the Mesh will appear on all other devices in the Mesh as available. If you click away on the offered folders, and basically accept the default location, you've now taken the folder from PC #1 and synchronized with the *new* folder on the dekstop on PC #2 and possibly done the same for folders from PC #2 on the desktop f PC #1.

To add a folder to the Live Mesh that will be synchronized between 2 or more computers and the Live Desktop is as follows.

    1. Install Live Mesh on 2 or more PCs.
    2. On one PC, select a folder that you wish to make part of your Mesh, to synchronize between devices. Let's assume that the folder already exists on a second PC. Add the folder to the Mesh.
    3. The folder will appear on your Live Desktop and files in the local folder will upload to the Live Desktop copy of the folder. On PC #2, a folder will appear on the desktop, but no files will be contained within.
    4. Click the new folder and select the Browse button to choose an existing local folder on PC #2 that you want to *merge* with the Meshed folder being offered. Accept the dialogs that describe this action. The folder will disappear from the desktop and the existing folder on PC#2 will now be a Live Mesh folder. If the files in this folder are already exactly the same as the files on the Live Desktop and on PC#1 for this folder, nothing else will happen until you make changes in any of the folder versions.
    5. Assuming that you also have a 3rd PC that does not have the folder and files already on it, when the Live Mesh folder appears on the desktop, you might want to create a new folder where you will point the Live Mesh sync to for the files to be shared with the Mesh, rather than have the new Live Mesh folder on the dekstop. Create the new folder, click on the new Live Mesh desktop folder and select browse to navigate to the new folder. Continue through the dialogs to merge the contents of the Live Mesh with this new empty folder. In a short time, depending on the size and number of files, the new folder will begin to fill, first with placeholders for the files that are being downloaded to PC #3 and then the actual copies of files.

    I hope that helped.
