The product ID -232- Indicates a not for resale MSDN account. If you are not the account holder and you purchased this in a retail box, the box and it's contents are counterfeit. Demand an immediate refund from the seller

You will have to purchase a legitimate windows from a legitimate retailer.

  • Reading the posts it seems as if I too have joined the ranks.

The ranks you joined are the ranks of those attracted to counterfeit copies of Windows by bargain pricing.  I bit too earlier this year.

Unfortunately there are no big bargains in genuine licensed software like Windows 7, Office, Creative Studio, etc.  Avoid heavy discounters for this kind of software.  There are tens of thousands of Chinese made counterfeit copies on eBay, the Amazon Marketplace, and discount websites using pirated MSDN and TechNet product keys.  Some sites don't even bother to sell the software, just bare keys (which are always illegal).

The safest approach is to only buy this kind of software from the manufacturer.  It looks more expensive but as you have now discovered isn't really.
