MSDN Windows Vista Ultimate no longer genuine. RRS feed

  • Question

  • My MSDN Windows Vista Ultimate is no longer genuine.

Visiting www.microsoft.com/genuine and clicking on Validate gives me an error: "The validation service is unable to determine whether this copy of Windows Vista is genuine."

I checked the key at the MSDN site, it is correct.

    Here´s the MGADiag.exe output:

  • Hello everyone,

Please post the results of the WGA diagnostics tool (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012) with any new question.  It helps me trouble shoot on this end.  An error code without your diag info most of the time won't tell me enough to resolve your issue.  Also please post the error code you see on the validation failure page you're getting.  The error code is gray and in brackets and can be found at the end of the message on the validation failure page your reach. Thanks!

  • I've got exactly the same problem.

Booted from my Vista disk for the first time in weeks today and immediately got the same error message. All attempts at validation fail in the same way - the validation site says "The validation service is unable to determine whether this copy of Windows Vista is genuine".

This system was previously activated with no problems using the activation code provided by my MSDN account.

  • Same issue here, two installations (one physical, on virtual) from MSDN key are experiencing the problem.

  • Something appears to have changed at the GA site, as both of my installations have now succeeded in re-validating.

    Same here, it's working again.

  • Folks:

Can you tell me more about the issue? Between when the issue occured and when it "fixed itself" did you install or uninstall any specific programs in your installations?

Do you happen to have a screenshot of the web-page you were pointed to?

As far as I'm aware, the activation keys were a one shot deal.. Activate on 1 computer 1 time deal,
    MSDN or not.

  • No changes were made between the re-validation failing and succeeding beyond the passage of time and the system shutdown/startup. Since the error is no longer occurring, I can't get a screenshot for you. Sorry...

  • MSDN and TechNet Plus download keys are generally good for 10 non-production-use (eval/testing only) activations.

  • I am having this issue tonight.

Got my Vista Ultimate through MSDN several weeks ago, activated during installation, and tonight it is telling me my vista is not activated.  When I try to re-activate I get 80070017.

  • I started to see the same thing happen here.  In the middle of a session, I started getting warnings that my copy of Windows isn't genuine, but the system control panel says Windows is activated.  Here's my MGADiag report:

So what makes a BIOS change invalidate VISTA Ultimate which was fully licensed and now suddenly is NOT !

I shutdown after using VISTA Ultimate and have not started the machine up for about 5 days and now it is invalide and when checking my license key says it is already in use, well DUH thats because i'm using it !

What is te general concensus on re-registering it because microsoft systems won't allow me to do it ?

    Thanks fo rthe details

Could you go to your c:\windows\system32 and DELETE "LegitCheckControl.dll" and go back to www.microsoft.com/genuine and validate? What happens?

  • I already tried that yesterday.  First of all, I couldn't simply delete the file, so I had to start the machine in safe mode to delete it.  But once that was done (and C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files\LegitCheckControl.inf), the control downloaded again but with the same result.  What did work was an upgrade install of Windows but only after I went back to www.microsoft.com/genuine first.

  • I am having the same issue.  I logged into this MSDN Vista Ultimate install today for the first time in several weeks and found it reporting it was unable to validate.

Same issues.. see the other thread I posted to for the WGA report.
    Saturday, February 24, 2007 8:28 AM
  • I seemed to have resolved this somehow..

I restarted my usual way which involves F8'ing to Disable Driver Sig Enforcement for my Audio Support..) and I ran validation with the same errors.

I rebooted into safe mode, and poked around Explorer a bit, but didn;t so anything besides look at computer properties, where it said itcouldn;t report on activation status.

I then rebooted normally, (no F8) and ran windows update from the start menu.. I chose the active sync USB update (I had 3 optional updates listed, the other 2 for the ATI graphics and touchpad drivers I always skip.. ) and whle it was downloading I went to microsoft.com/genuine and now it validated..

    strange but true.

Maybe this is related to driver sig enforcement somehow..
