Invalid License for Windows Vista?

    Question

  • I have a Dell Inspiron 1521 from 2007 that came with Windows Vista Home premium. My sister gave me this laptop about a year ago so I'm not aware of any previous issues with it. Anyway, today a dialog box appeared telling me that my version of Windows was invalid and that I had to activate Windows today. As recommended, I've run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool and here are the results:

     0xC004F050 usually means that you've misread a character - either C/G/6 or B/8 or Y/V are the most common, an O/0 is almost always a Q

     

    Note that the following characters cannot be used - A E I L N O S U Z 1 0 - so don't bother trying unless you like the noise it makes :)

    If it still fails, try this....

     

    Recreate the Licensing Store with the correct data.

     

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.

    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.

    3) Find the file CMD.exe

    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

    5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing

    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32

    9) Type: net start slsvc

    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

    11) Restart your computer twice. 

     

    You may be asked to enter your COA Key and/or Activate. – if asked for the Key, use the one on your COA sticker on the machine’s case (you may need to activate by telephone).  

     

    Once complete, run another MGADiag report and post back with the results.

  • That's a rarity! - a Blocked COA_SLP Key.

    Does the Product Key in the report agree with the Product Key on your COA sticker?

    For what version and edition of Windows is your machine licensed, according to the sticker?

    Your installation of Office Enterprise is probably counterfeit - unless you acquired it through your employer or college - as it's a Volume License only edition.

  • No the key's don't match, oddly enough, but I vaguely remember my sister having this problem with Windows. The sticker says it was licensed for Windows Vista Home Premium.

  • In that case, try swapping the Key with the one on the sticker....

     You need to change the Product Key to the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case (or inside the battery compartment),  using the Change Product Key link at the bottom of the System properties page.

     

    You may need to activate by phone.

  • I've tried the product key on the sticker before, but I only get this message: "The product key you have entered does not appear to be a valid Windows Vista(TM) product key. Please check your product key, and type it again."

    and I assure you I typed it in correctly. Do you recommend I call to activate?
