  • Question

  • I have several problems with my pc. I have tried and tried to fix it. I've looked through tons of q&a on your sites and others. It started with the office 11. When I tried to open any program, it starts the installer. You can click cancel and it opens, but it takes time and is frustrating. Then I tried to install Dragon Naturally Speaking Ver 10, and it wouldn't install part of it, yet the headset has sound even though my speakers don't. I hate to say this, but I tried to go in and fix some things in the registry (bad me) but made it worse. I have problems connecting to places with IE, but not Firefox (which I downloaded a couple of years ago due to slow IE connection. I am an administrator (it's my pc) yet it sometimes tells me to log on to admin acct. I changed some permissions to allow me as admin (like it was) and now I have a mess!!! I copied the info from GMA which said it couldn't fix it and to contact MS. It said that there was also an error with the cryptographic string. It is below. PLEASE HELP!

    Thank you

  • Hello Cowboy45,

Here is a snippet of your mgadiag report:

    OGA Data-->
Office Status: 114 Blocked VLK 2
Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 - 114 Blocked VLK 2
Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 - 114 Blocked VLK 2

    OGA Version: N/A, 0x80070002
    Signed By: N/A, hr = 0x80070002
    Office Diagnostics: 025D1FF3-230-1

The report says you have a Blocked VLK, which means that (a) your Dell Dimension 9100 computer has a Volume Licensing edition of Office Professional Edition 2003 installed, and that (b) a Blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) was used to install it.  A "blocked" VLK is one that was issued by Microsoft to a business, educational institution, or governmental agency for their exclusive use in accordance with a Volume Licensing Agreement.  (Note that such use does NOT allow the resale of such VLKs.)  However, because the VLK may have been reported lost, stolen, or compromised to the internet by the original keyholder, or because the Volume Licensing Agreement has expired, Microsoft has blocked the VLK from further use.

If your use of this Volume Licensing edition of Office Professional Edition 2003 is in association with an organization that has a Volume Licensing Agreement, then please contact the IT support staff of the organization for further assistance.

If you are an individual consumer, you should never have been sold Volume Licensing materials such as a VL disc, and you certainly should not have received a Blocked Product Key.

Your first course of action is to confront your seller with this information and demand a full refund.

If the seller refuses to help, please file a piracy report at
www.microsoft.com/piracy.  Also, depending upon whether you received "high quality" counterfeit materials, you may qualify for the Office Complimentary Offer or for the Office Genuine Advantage discounted offer.  Please see the FAQ here:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC  If you would like to participate in the Office Genuine Offer, please click the Learn More Online link being displayed on your screen by the OGA Notifier utility.

Another possibility is that at one time your computer did have a Genuine installation of Office installed, but for some reason it was replaced with the current installation which is nongenuine.  This could have happened if you took your computer to a repair shop and they reinstalled Windows and/or Office and some or all of your programs.  You Get Genuine once again by uninstalling the current nongenuine installation of Office and using your Genuine Microsoft hologrammed Office installation CDs, along with the genuine Product Key found on your Office Edition's Certificate of Authenticity, to put back the genuine installation of Office you may have already had on the computer.

Given the other problems you are having with the computer, and the attempts you have made to fix it, my suggestion would be to "blow it up and start over."  That means you should backup and offload your data, then use the Dell-supplied reinstallation or recovery solution to put a clean fresh installation of XP Media Center onto your Dell.  This model of Dell should have the "Dell PC Restore by Symantec" recovery program and partition installed.  If you see a blue bar with www.dell.com in it at the top of the screen for 2 seconds during computer bootup, you have it installed.  Running it will wipe out the C: drive then reimage it to factory fresh out-of-the-box condition in about 15 minutes.  To access it, restart, then while that blue bar is displayed, press CTRL + F11 to access Dell PC Restore.  Remember this nukes the C: drive so be sure to back everything up and offload it to CD/DVD, flash drive, external hard drive, etc. BEFORE you run the recovery.

While this is a lot of time consuming work, especially reinstalling your programs and downloading all of the service packs and updates that have been published since the computer was shipped, you will be very happy with the results because Windows will run faster and work much better.
