WHS hang when finishing client backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Note, this is similar to a previous problem of mine: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/whspowerpack3beta/thread/9eac2a40-dd9d-4892-b55e-05b234d7599d

Running a backup, either manual or automatic, from a client (Win 7 or Win Vista) causes the WHS system to "stop".  It doesn't bluescreen, it just stops responding.  Sometimes if I try to log directly into the system the mouse will work, sometimes I can actually log in but there is no network, sometimes it is just non-responsive.  The event log just before the "hang", apparently just as the backup is finishing, says:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: MRxSmb
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 8003
    Date:  7/7/2010

    Description:
The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer INTELESS that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{7DF8EA4E-6CFF-4108-. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

After resetting the system, all the event log shows is:

    WHS PP3:

Windows Home Server Backup & Restore: 6.0.2423.0
Windows Home Server Drive Extender: 6.0.2423.0
Windows Home Server Remote Access: 6.0.2423.0
Windows Home Server Storage Manager: 6.0.2423.0

Gigabyte EP45-UD3LR motherboard, 4GB RAM, 6TB server storage.

The backups work, but I have to plan on rebooting my WHS every time I make one. I've rebuilt the system, installed new client software, same problem.

  • Very odd (or just Windows updates doing what they are supposed to do).  The problem went away one day, apparently after running Windows Update.  I am now able to run backups without the WHS hanging.

I can't be sure which update fixed the problem (again, I'm assuming the update was the solution, I have no proof), the last one installed was:

Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB2286198).

It was installed August 6, 2010.  The previous updates, installed after the last time I tried to backup, were installed on July 14, 2010:

Windows Malicious Sofware Removal Tool - July 2010 (KB890830)
Security Update for Windows Server 2003 (KB2229593)

  • Master browser elections are pretty normal, when you're using NetBIOS over TCP/IP. But is INTELESS one of your machines?

Also, have you investigated whether you have stable network drivers everywhere? Have you validated that your router, switches (if any), cables, etc. are all up to snuff?

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • Yes, INTELESS is one of my boxes (a NAS box).  Other than always seeing one of these errors right before (after? during?) the WHS hang, I don't think it's actually a problem.  I move terabytes of data from everywhere to everywhere (this WHS is one of my main servers), the only issue I have with it is when I do a backup, where it faithfully hangs everytime :-)  I have changed switches, etc. (i.e., changed my network topology), to see if that changed the problem, with no effect.
