Shared Folders not showing up on WHS Site RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have WHS installed to a Compact Flash card, 2 - 1TB drives. Now, 1 of the drives contains all of my data. The other drive is a mirror image of the first drive. The CF card containing the operating system has no data on it. It is purely for running the OS. I share my folders from my data drive over the network just fine. My problem is when I login to my WHS Site it does not show those folders under the Shared Folders list. Is there a specific permission set, access policy, or other setting i need to add to those shares to make them show up on the site?

Lara has already addressed the unsupported hardware configuration, and the fact that installing any Windows operating system to CF is a bad idea. :)

Regarding your shares, Windows Home Server will only make shares created through the Windows Home Server console available on the remote access web site. I take it that you're managing your shares yourself? Please read at least the first three documents under the heading "Help & how-to" at Lara's first link.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

    Hi,

This is unsupported. A Windows Home Server install requires 70GB and I strongly suggest that you do not use a CF card as flash memory can only support a limited number of read/write operations.  As for mirroring, please see the technical documents here specifically the document on drive extender.

Ok, well i don't want the OS to be on the same drive as my data. If i were to put in a 70GB hard drive i would be in the same place. CF card aside a 70GB drive is still way too small to fit all my information.

Nevertheless, it's an unsupported (and not recommended) configuration. If you will read the documentation that Lara has pointed out for you, you will gain a much better understanding of how Windows Home Server manages drives and data; the fact that you are asking this question in the first place indicates that you don't have a very good picture of this now. Windows Home Server is not a traditional desktop or server operating system in terms of data or storage management, and assuming that it handles such matters in a familiar way is a recipe for disaster.

The minimum requirement for Windows Home Server is a 70GB HDD so that the install can create the 20GB sys partition for the OS and set up the second partition for DATA, you can; however use any size drive above 70GB.  After setup you can add additional [empty] drives to the storage pool via the console which is where your 2-1TB drives should be. I have a 7TB storage pool.

Please read the documentation I linked to. Based on your responses, it sounds like you may lose data in the event of a HDD failure or server reinstall as the drives are not added via the console which means these drives are not duplicated via Windows Home Server and as Ken stated, it is why you cannot see them via Remote Access.
