Universal apps: How to switch Win/WP design view for shared mainpage.xaml RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

This is my first day developing universal app, and I'm right now investigating if shared xaml could be something for me.

I have a shared mainpage.xaml, and it works. But I want to switch between WP and Windows in design view, without changing startup project, and build the solution. I only have the Windows tablet lookalike in design view.

Everything works great when setting startup project and running app, but this is a design view question only.

    Best regards /Magnus

  • Hi Magnus,

    Thanks for your friendly response.

    >>This is not about running the app, it's about when designing it. When modifying the xaml, I always see the Windows Phone template layout (probably because something I chosen from the beginning). If I want to design it, but see the Windows template layout, I cannot do this. Is it possible?

You know that this forum is to discuss the VS IDE, as you said that if it is related to the specific app design view, to help you resolve this issue as soon as possible, you could post this issue to the windows phone forum here:

    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/wpapps/en-us/home?category=wpapps

So it would be better for the Windows phone experts to repro this issue. I think you would get dedicated support from the Windows Phone expert there. Thanks for your understanding.

    Sincerely,

  • I found the simple solution!

Just chosen the other project in the top left of the xaml code window, directly above the xaml code.

  • Hi Magnus,

Thank you for posting in the MSDN forum.

Not the real Universal apps expert, based on the following document, if you want to switch between two projects, I’m afraid that we need to change the startup project in default.

    Reference:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/apps/dn609832.aspx

When you build the solution, Microsoft Visual Studio builds a Windows Phone Store app and a Windows Store app. When you run the solution, for example by pressing F5, the project that is set as the startup project is the one that runs. To set either the phone or Windows project as startup project, right click on the project node in Solution Explorer and choose Set as Startup Project. The project that you choose shows in bold in Solution Explorer. In the previous image, App1.Windows (Windows 8.1) is the startup project.

To get the real solution for this issue, I did some research about this issue, I found that a blog shared us some information about it, so if possible, you could add a comment for this issue in this blog, and maybe you could get direct solution from the product team expert here:

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/visualstudio/archive/2014/04/14/using-visual-studio-to-build-universal-xaml-apps.aspx

In addition, based on the author Navit Saxena’s suggestion:

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to post below or contact us via forums or UserVoice .

Maybe you could get better forum for this issue. Thanks for your understanding.

    Best Regard,

  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply, and sorry for the late answer.

I'm not sure you got the question right. This is not about running the app, it's about when designing it. When modifying the xaml, I always see the Windows Phone template layout (probably because something I chosen from the beginning). If I want to design it, but see the Windows template layout, I cannot do this. Is it possible?

    Best regards /Magnus
