  • Just saw that error at a client last week and the SQL server was the problem. Even if your installing CRM on the SQL server this error can occur.

My troubleshooting at the client led me to find an AD problem with an improperly removed DC that was still residing in the LDAP database. This and some DNS problems and misconfigurations caused us to realize that reading the SPNs of the machine account attribute was not being successful. We used NTDSUTIL to remove the metadata of the old DC and were then able to install CRM.

  • Greetings,

When you install CRM, the setup application writes to a log file. Could you reply with the 20 or so log file lines before and after this error occurred?  That will help to know what step the setup application was in when the failure occurred.

Here's a link to an article that relates to this problem: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb326282.aspx

Are you able to login to the database from a remote computer?

    Thanks,

  • if you are trying to install from a share location, can you copy the set up folder to the server and try?

  • I received the same error message when trying to upgrade a crm 3.0 image, where the installation files were on my local machine.

I then copied the installation files to the image and restarted the installation - worked fine!

That would still indicate problems in the network.    There is no substitute for removing bumps in the road on the network and years of deployment from beta 1.0 to CRM 4.0 bear that out.

  • Go to SQL Server Configuration Manager --> Network configuration --> Protocols
    Enable "Shared Memory"
