SyncToy 2.1 Long path name RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have encountered the below error during the synchronization of some folder structures. Instead of changing the structure to comply with the required path length, is there anyway to tweak SyncToy allowing to do so? I am used to use another sync tool, which allows to do so without a problem. Thanks.

*** Error: Cannot write to the destination file. The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters

  • Hi QPascal,

To my knowladge, maybe it is caused by OS limitation. OS limit the "path length" + "file name length" below a number (maybe 256). So if you want to copy(or sync) a long-named file into a long-path-named folder, OS will disallow you to do that, either manually or with SyncToy.
