WHS co-existence with SBS? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm looking to learn about SBS. Having a technet subscription, I've downloaded it, but before I go live, I'd like to know if it can co-exist with WHS on my LAN. I know it acts as a DHCP server, so I'll have to disable the DHCP server on my router, but beyond that I'm ignorant. For example, will WHS still back up my PC if I attach it to SBS?

    What are the issues here?

  • Not that I'm aware of. You can check the full list of forums here, and the forums on Technet and MSDN, but I don't see anything specifically for SBS. The Windows Server forums on Technet are probably as close as you'll come, in terms of Microsoft-sponsored social platforms.

  • Windows Home Server can't be a domain controller, or joined to a domain, but it can exist on the same network as a domain. And yes, a domain-joined PC can be backed up to your server.

  • It will even backup SBS (2003) server if you like. NOT sure about backing up SBS 2008, but I guess that should also work, never tested that myself.

I haven't tried 2008, but yes, it will back up 2003. Note that you should not use Windows Home Server as your only backup tool for SBS; there are additional tasks performed during a SBS backup cycle that need to be done occasionally, and that WHS backup won't do. However, it makes a pretty good first try at restoring your SBS network quickly. :)

  • I have the same setup... an SBS 2003 server with a WHS also on the same lan.  I was under the impression though, that when WHS first came out there was an issue with loading the WHS client on a machine that actually belonged to a Windows Domain (SBS, or others).  Is that still an issue ?

  • There was never an "issue" with installation. There are requirements for installation to be successful; the one most likely to bite someone is that the user that you're logged in to the domain-joined computer as must be a local administrator on that computer.

Where some users have problems is getting a domain ID and a Windows Home Server user synced up. The easy way to deal with that is to not worry about it. The first time you connect to your WHS shares, you'll be asked for a user id and password. Just opt to save those credentials (checkbox in the security dialog). This is what I did with my company laptop.
