Question

Security Essentials will not load now and Genuine Advantage tests either hang or fail. Windows 7 Ultimate - Legitimate installation running for months before this issue.

I will go to the MSE forum as a system restore from the point before the MSE update fixed all issues.
Thanks to all for the help!

I believe your issue is not related to any Microsoft Genuine Advantage issue. For troubleshooting an installation issue with Microsoft Security Essentials, try posting to the experts in the dedicated Microsoft Security Essentials Forum.

As Colin says, please see what happens if you attempt validation - your system appears to be properly activated. There is a minor error in the WAT area, which should be cleared by manual validationHowever, you do have one definite problem - your installation of Office XP is counterfeit.

Yes that is the url that Security Essentials sends me to. The Green circle on that page spins for awhile then appears to hang. After some time it comes back with the message "Windows Validation was interrupted".
Following the Troubleshooting advice it says to delete KB971033 and reinstall the update. I do that and it hangs and comes back with the same "Windows Validation was interupted" message. This is with IE9 and current on all updates.
I will remove the office xp.
Thanks.

Visit Genuine Microsoft Software – Diagnostic Site and click on Start Diagnostics, then restart your computer. Does this correct the issue?

The download fails to install with error code 0x80070643. It directs me to this page.
I then find the error code on this page.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/i-cant-install-microsoft-security-essentials
I follow all instructions (disable startup items, disable non microsoft services ...) No luck.
One intresting thing is I go into control panel to just remove Security Essentials entirely and I find it's listed twice. I go to remove the first one listed and unintall fails with 0x80070643. The error leads me to the same pages as above. I go to uninstall the second one listed and it says I'm trying to run a 32bit program on a 64 bit OS and fails. Not sure how a 32bit version could have ever ben installed on this PC.
Maybe if I could uninstall both I could reinstall Security Essentials. Again this was working fine for months until now.

I am unsure which forum this issue should be directed to. Since the issue is with installing MSE, my first choice would be to direct you to the MSE forum as Carey suggested. However, if Noel is correct (and he usually is) then Windows Update forum may be the proper forum.
You may want to post to the MSE forum but be sure to mention the 643 error and that it may be related to corruption in Windows Updates.
(I have marked both Carey and Noel's post as the Answer for this thread since both suggestions seem to have merit).
