  • Question

  • I recenlty purchased my new laptop and it came with windows vista basic home version.  My question is when I place the Prodcut key from the tag on the bottom of my computer, it states it is incorrect.  I have tried to upgrade to a different version but since I dont have a DVR drive it doesnt allow the upgrade to take effect.  I have copied my info from the forum to see where my problem lies.  Please help.  Some of the microsoft options I need to use for school, and I cannot use them after the trial period and I have to reset them everytime.

  • Hi esutton,

Computers that come with Vista Pre-installed (from large companies such as Toshiba, Dell, HP) Do not require you to Activate. The computers are already activated from the factory.

There is No need to use the product key from the side of your computer, but if you do, you are required to Activate by Phone.

    Thank you,

  • I am having the same problem.  Did you find out how to fix the problem.  My computer is a toshiba and came with vista home basic addition.  This has really been a pain since I am in college and use my computer everyday.

  • Hi Darin,

I also had the same problem that ESutton had, thankyou for your reply, it was extremely helpful!  I have already rung microsoft & activated by phone, but every time I open any microsoft program the screen still keeps coming up telling me to enter in the product key even though I have already activated microsoft. Would you be able to let me know what I can do to stop this from happening?

    Thankyou kindly,

  • Computer manufacturers often install a trial version of Microsoft Office.  If you are getting a prompt to type in a Product Key when opening a Microsoft Office program, it s likely the trial period is over and you'll need to purchase a license (product key) for Microsoft Office.

The product key affixed to your computer is for Windows Vista (the operating system) and not for Microsoft Office.  Please review the following:
