  • Hello MicrosoftXbox360FTW,

    The error "System Error 2 has occurred. The system cannot find the file specified ."  Can mean one of two things.

    a) The Registry Entry that tells Windows were to find the file is corrupt or malformed. This is the most common and is usually caused by an over zealous Registry Cleaner.

    The steps that Carey posted were designed to resolve this possibility.

    b) If the Registry Entry is good, then the only other conclusion I can draw is that the file, itself, is missing.  In which case, I recommend either contacting Microsoft Assisted Support (at one of the below URLs) or to reinstall Windows.

    North America: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/cu_sc_genadv_master?ws=support&ws=support#tab4

    Outside North America:
    http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support#tab0

    Thank you,

    Darin MS

    Software Licensing service is not running.

    The error message above says it all :)
    Click on the Start button
    in the Search box, type
    SERVICES.MSC
    and hit the Enter key
    accept the UAC prompt, and the Services console should appear.
    Look down the list for the Software Licensing Service.
    right-click on it, and select Properties.
    Ensure that the Startup type is set to Automatic, and attempt to start the service
    If the service fails to start, make a note of the EXACT error message.
    If the service starts, and then almost immediately stops, you may have malware.
    if the service starts OK, then reboot the machine - run another MGADiag report, and post the results back here.

    I got this Error: Windows could not start the software licensing service on local computer. Error 3: The system cannot find the path specified.

    Hmmm - System Error 3 is often caused by registry problems originating from reigstry 'Cleaners/Optimisers/Defraggers' - have you used any such on this machine in the few day before the problem appeared?
    Go to
    Look in the  Announcements section at the top - follow the advice in the 'Fix for ‘Software Licensing service Has Stopped’ on some Vista 64bit systems"
    Once complete, reboot, and then run another MGADiag report.

  • This is what it told me too do..  Your error message "The system cannot find the file specified" suggets that your Registry Cleaner may have changed (instead of deleted) the Registry Entry, tell Vista where the file slsvc.exe is located. to a different location...so when Vista looks for the slsvc.exe file, if can't find it.

    What I would like you to do is run Regedit.exe
      If you have access to the Start button, just type regerit in the Start Search field and hit enter
      If you don't have access to the Start button, then you will need to run the regedit.exe from the CMD window.

    Once you have the Registry Editor open, click 'File' and select 'Export'.
    Name it 'RegBackup' and save it to your desktop.
       If there are any problems, you can double click this files and your Registry will reset back to how it is right now.

    In the Rgistry Editor, expand 'HKEYLOCAL_MACHINE'
    Then expand 'SYSTEM"
    Then expand 'CurrentControlSet'
    Then expand 'Services'
    Now, find (and click on) 'slsvc'

    You should see 13 entries. I would like you to look at the "Description", "DisplayName" and "ImagePath" entries and compare them to what I list below:

    Name                                    Type                                        Data

    Description                            REG_SZ                           @%SystemRoot%\system32\SLsvc.exe,-102
    DisplayName                         REG_SZ                            @%SystemRoot%\system32\SLsvc.exe,-101
    ImagePath                            REG_SZ                            %SystemRoot%\system32\SLsvc.exe

    Are all 3 of these Entries visable in your Registry?
    If so, do they exactly match what I have listed?
    If not, what is different?

    I did that the description and displayname is in the right spot but i dont even have a image path in that folder... How do i get it or get it back ?

  • Scratch that i just recovered my backups from a registry cleaner and i got the ImagePath back.. All in corrdct places Bust still didnt fix the problem.. What now?

    Which registry cleaner? restore ALL the backups and then ditch the cleaner - it's snake-oil, and does more harm than good.
    Did you reboot?
    Where's the new MGADiag report?
    Please Export the HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\slsvc branch to a file on your desktop.
    The Open the file using Notepad (DO NOT double-click on it!), copy the contents, and put them in your response.

  • Unfortunately, the use of third-party registry cleaners may sufficently corrupt the Windows operating system to the point that only a reinstallation will redeem the computer.

  • Reinstallation ?
    Monday, February 7, 2011 9:19 PM
  • No, that is not necessary.

    On the main Vista forum page (http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/threads ), at the very top, is an announcement titled "Fix for ‘Software Licensing service Has Stopped’ on some Vista 64bit system "

     The instructions in that announcement was designed to fix your specific issue.  Basically, it will instruct you on how to create a text file containing all the proper registry setting for the registry entry that is currently corrupt. Once done, you just have to rename the text files extension from .txt to .reg. (this turns the file into a Registry Backup file) Then you just double click the Registry Backup file (that you just made) and it will recreate that bad Registry Entry using the correct settings.

    Background information:

    Some "free" Registry Cleaners will delete the "ImagePath" portion of the Registry Entry that tells windows were to find the slsvc.exe file. This results in a "System Error 3" when you attempt to restart the Software Licensing Service.

    But you used the Registry Cleaner to restore all the changes the Registry Cleaner made...why isn't it fixed?

    Well, to put it bluntly, this Free Registry Cleaner screwed up when it did the restore.  Take a look at the Registry you posted:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\slsvc]
    "DisplayName"="@%SystemRoot%\\system32\\SLsvc.exe,-101"
    "Group"="ProfSvc_Group"
    "Description"="@%SystemRoot%\\system32\\SLsvc.exe,-102"
    "ObjectName"="NT AUTHORITY\\NetworkService"
    "ErrorControl"=dword:00000001
    "Start"=dword:00000002
    "Type"=dword:00000010
    "DependOnService"=hex(7):52,00,70,00,63,00,53,00,73,00,00,00,00,00
    "ServiceSidType"=dword:00000001

      00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,67,00,65,00,00,00,53,00,65,00,49,00,6d,00,70,00,65,00,\
      72,00,73,00,6f,00,6e,00,61,00,74,00,65,00,50,00,72,00,69,00,76,00,69,00,6c,\
      00,65,00,67,00,65,00,00,00,00,00
    "FailureActions"=hex:80,51,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,14,00,00,\
      00,01,00,00,00,c0,d4,01,00,01,00,00,00,e0,93,04,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00
    "ImagePath"="%SystemRoot%\\system32\\SLsvc.exe"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\slsvc\Enum]
    "0"="Root\\LEGACY_SLSVC\\0000"
    "Count"=dword:00000001

    In the line that I highlighted, the path (%SystemRoot%\\system32\\SLsvc.exe ) should be in hexadecimal code, not a plain text address.  This is what the registry Cleaner screwed up when it did the restore, it restored the Path as a plain text address, instead of the proper hexadecimal code.

    Hope that helps,

  • I need some one to instruct me on how to create a text file containing all the proper registry setting for the registry entry that is currently corrupt. Once done, tell me how to rename the text files extension from .txt to .reg.   Here is the link to my last question that got closed....http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinevista/thread/f1105df1-d996-4df6-8dfd-69d7460382bf

  •  If you receive the following error “Software Licensing Service Has Stopped” it may be caused by a specific Registry Key being deleted. This Registry Key tells Vista the location of the file slsvc.exe, which is the file that runs the Software Licensing Service. This will cause Windows Validation to fail.

    We believe this Registry key is being deleted by some Registry Cleaner programs and currently appears to only affect 64bit versions of Vista.

    To determine if your issue qualifies as one that would be resolved by this fix, please confirm your issue matched ALL of the below criteria. If it does not, please Do Not attempt the Resolution Steps at the bottom of this thread.

    A) Your Vista is a 64bit version

    B) Diagnostic Report shows code "0x80070426" after line "Online Validation Code:"

    C) Diagnostic Report Does Not show any numbers after line "TTS Error:"

    (You can generate a Diagnostic Report by downloading and running MGADiag Tool at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

    If your issue fits criteria A), B) and C), please continue to criteria D)

    D) Attempt to re-start the Software Licensing Service using the below steps:

    ~If you receive error "System error 3 has occurred.  The system cannot find the path specified." Continue to the Resolution Steps, below.

    ~If you receive error "System Error 2 has occured. The system cannot find the file specified." Continue to the Resoution Steps below
    .

    ~If you do not receive either error, your issue will (most likely) not be fixed by the below Resolution Steps.

    (If you have access to the Start button, follow these steps):

    1) Click the Start button

    2) Type: cmd in the Start Search field

    3) At the top the Start window, you will see cmd.exe

    4) Right Click cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: net start slsvc

    (If you do not have access to the Start button, follow these steps):

    1) Click the option that launches an Internet Browser

    2) A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field

    3) Find the file cmd.exe

    4) Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: net start slsvc

    Resolution Steps:

    1)      Open Notepad
    2)      Copy the below (green) text and paste it into Notepad

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\slsvc]

    3)      In Notepad, click ‘File’ then select ‘Save As’
    4)      In the ‘Save As’ window, select ‘Desktop’ as the location to save to.
    5)      Click the ‘Save as Type’ dropdown menu and select ‘All File(*.*)’
    6)      In the ‘File Name:’ field, type: slsvc_reg.reg
    7)      Click the ‘Save’ button
    8)      The file should now be on your desktop, double-click it
    9)      Reboot your computer
    10)    To confirm this has resolved your Issue, repeat the steps in D) (above) and ensure the slsvc service has started

      If this post resolved your issue and you suspect a specific program may have caused the issue (i.e. you suspect the program may have deleted one of your Vista’s Registry Entries).  Please create a forum thread (by clicking the “New” dropdown menu, on the Vista forum main page, and select “General Discussion”) and tell us the program’s Name and Version (and if you downloaded it, where from) so we can test it out.

    Thank you,

    Thank you,
