Have a laptop that I purchased second-hand that has COA but fails WGA. Are my options to pay over $1000 or get a linux distro? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

Bought a laptop second hand and have loaded some apps on and have been using it now to the point where it is hard to reload again.

It has a certificate of Authenticty but I recently reponded to the windows media 11 update and now it will not run media player as it is fails the authenticy test. It is an older laptop so I am not about to go out and buy a new OS for it. I will wait and buy a new laptop.

    Looks like my options are:

    1. Pay over $1000 to upgrade to a new Win XP Pro as instructed by the validation tool.

    2. Reload a Linux distro on my machine.

    3. Find 3rd party players for media files.

I have to say, I will do all that I can to buy an OS other than Vista on the new one as this validation stuff is a real pain.

Can't the creative wisdom of MS come up with a better idea??

  • Contact the manufacturer of your laptop and ask if they have a Windows XP reinstallation, restore or recovery CD you can obtain.

  • Hello Boomer11,

I'm unsure if you are requesting support or providing some sort of feedback.

If you are requesting support, please provide a detailed description of your issue as well as run the Genuine Diagnostics tool to try and identify the issue you may be having.
Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a response message in this thread.
Step 2 is tell us about the COA. Tell us:
    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

If you are providing feedback, the 'Feedback and Comments' forum  (http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=1003&SiteID=25) would be a better place for your post. But I am not convinced that the options, that you have listed, are your only options. If you are, in fact, interested in possable additional options, then I suggest following the instructions above so we may try to resolve your issue.

    Thank you,
    Darin Smith
