Connector Intallation Baffling RRS feed

  • Question

  • I can't get the connector software to install on any PC on my network.  I went through the troubleshooting list.  Note, my server's name is "archive".

    1. Try hitting http://archive - check
    2. Try hitting http://archive:55000/enrollid/id.xml - I get <id>1</id>
    3. Try hitting https://archive:56000/enroll/id.xml - I get <id>2</id>
    4. Try hitting http://archive:55000/enrollid/id.aspx - I get a page of XML including a certificate inside a <MASTER> element.

When I try going through the extender setup, it goes through the installation.  It detects my server and asks for my password.  A short while after I give it the password, I get an error that says "An unknown network error has occurred."  Below, it says "Please verify that your network connectio nis active and that your Windows Home Server is powered on. Then restart this Wizard."

One thing that is different about my setup is that I have a domain.  The beta version of WHS worked fine with my computers.

I know it isn't name resolution.  I can get to the files on the server via UNC (\\archive\software).

I tried a completely clean install of WHS.  I tried this on a clean, freshly re-installed PC running XP.  I tried on a PC running Vista.  I just tried installing on a virtual machine that is not on my domain with the same result.

    Any ideas?

  • Actually, the location was the problem.  I was installing from "\\archive\software\Home Server\Home Server Connector Software".  Apparently, that's a stale version from before "Power Pack 1".  That seems like a setup bug that the upgrade leaves the old version of that in the place the original setup installed it.

Did you add the server to the domain?  If so, that's unsupported and could be your problem.

Did you try installing the Connector software from the software share?  It should be \\archive\software\home server connector software.  Also, did you ever rename/move/delete the Connector software folder?  If so, that would explain why you can't install it from the website.

  • You should have current connector software in that location. A few other users have also reported problems similar to yours, so could you please submit a bug on Connect? Include logs from your server, collected using the error reporting functionality in the Windows Home Server toolkit.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
