Migrating from CRM 2011 on-premise to Online

Question
-
Hi there,
We currently run CRM 2011 on-premise, we have 5 users and minimal customisations so far. We would like to migrate from On-premise to Online as we have this available through our Office 365 plan. Is there a migration tool available from Microsoft, or a manual migration guide? We have searched for info online and can only find 3rd party tools that provide this function that are very pricey for such a small company.
Are we stuck doing this manually or is there a way?
Steve

You could also move your customizations and then push using Scribe.

As previously mentioned in your post you can export the solution and import it into CRM Online/Office365.
For transfering your data I recommend using the Dynamics Connector with the Dynamics CRM 2011 Instance Adapter ( http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35385 )This is a tool designed to synchronize data between two CRM organizations and includes an installtion guide.
Once your organizations are synchronized you can remove the adapter and connector and start using CRM Online.

Synchronicity Echo is designed to do exactly what you need - on-premise to online data migration (as far as I recall you would need to migrate customisations yourself first, which is of course easily done through exporting and importing the default solution).
http://www.synchronicity-systems.co.uk/echo/index
Pricing seems reasonable to me for a one-off exercise, but of course different businesses' budgets will vary.
Hope this helps.

For the migrating from CRM on premise to online has two parts:
1.Customization
You can export the total solution as following:
- Go to Settings->Customization->Export Solution
- Click Next->Choose what you want to export.
- Click Next to export.
Then you can go to another CRM Online instance, go to Settings->Solutions->Import solution.
2. Data
For the out of box function of CRM 2011 Online, we does not support all data export one time. But we support all data export for one entity one time as following:
Let us take example that you want to export data for Account and Contact record types.
1. Create a view of all fields for the record type Account.
a. Go to accounts Grid and click on Create personal view
- Click Edit Columns in the dialog that pops up and then click Add Columns.
- Click the checkbox in the header to select all columns. (This will export data for all columns, some of which may not be importable)
- Click ‘ok’ and then Click ‘Save’ on the Ribbon in Advanced find dialog. It will prompt you for name of the view .Provide the name for the view.
2. Navigate to view (Account) and Export the data in Static Excel format.
a) Go to Accounts Grid.
b) Navigate to Accounts view.
c) Click Export to Excel.
d) Select “Static worksheet with records from all pages in current view”.
e) Click Export and save the file. (Account.xls)(The records that are exported will be based on the record for which you had privileges).
f) Save the file in CSV /XML format from Excel. (Account.csv)

Thanks for the input so far. From looking at other threads we can see that the only options are manual export/import or one of these 3rd party tools. The amount of data we have doesn't really warrant the cost of the 3rd party tools. I think we will be looking at doing it manually, we have been trying some dry runs at this today and have only encountered one issue, which is retaining the correct Owner of the imported entity.
Still surprising that Microsoft Dynamics haven't developed a tool to assist with migrations like this.

Have you looked at the OOB CSV and XML import capabilities? In Settings - Data Management you can download template XML files that open in Excel. Then I would export your data from On-Prem using SQL or Excel output and copy/paste them into the XML files. When importing, you have some options about how CRM resolves lookups like Owner.
I personally would do what Jamie suggests and use Scribe, but if your data is simple and you just want to get er done, then the copy-paste can work on small/simple datasets.

You can actually do this using out of the box functionality.
Create a new solution with all the components you wish to migrate, save it, export it and import it into the online environment.
Migrating data can be quite tricky, but can be done by using an Advanced Find (On each entity) and exporting the data (Create a new view with all items + export to excel. Enable it to be re-uploaded (Checkbox when saving it) - Then import on the online environment.
Note when uploading, depending on your data, you may get a lot of duplication errors and lookup references not found. Try to make sure you've got no major duplication (Contacts etc) and that when you do import the data, you do 'small bits' first, e.g. all the... Products.

Hi All,
I see a lot of solutions, but no solution to keep information as private views, dashboards and charts.
Also the sharing information will be lost.
Someone a solution for that?Thanks,
