    can`t get microsoft updates. Says windows update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. Restarted 7 times.

    Read the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 555989.
    If this does not fix your problem, try resetting the Windows Update components as indicated in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 971058.
