  • Question

  • Hi all

My first post here. I recently passed my exams to become MCDST in Windows XP. My role in my job also requires me to know about ASP .NET 2.0. I use Visual Web Developer Express Edition 2005 currently, to develop our intranet forms, but nothing really data driven as yet.

    That is about to change.

I want to learn ASP .NET via MS Press books, and looked at MCTS Exam 70-536 to get started. I know relatively little about ASP so far, so am a complete beginner.

My aim is to reach MCPD Web Developer status, but I have to pass MCTS first. Is there a better book or route to take that takes into account my lack of knowledge in this area?

    Thanks in advance.

  • G'day Roger,

take a look at http://www.asp.net/LEARN/. From that website: "We have hundreds of pages of tutorials and dozens of hours of video to help you learn ASP.NET and Visual Web Developer. This content is tailored to a variety of learning styles and technical levels."

Then, if you think you're ready, make sure you are confident with each of the objectives for the 70-536 Exam http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/exams/70-536.aspx

    Good luck!

  • Congratulations on your MCDST.

To read the 70-536 will help you get started with your plans of becoming a MCPD, but is not enough. My suggestion is to aim first for MCTS:Web, and then work with the product for a while before you attempt the MCPD. The reason I say that is because the MCPD will require real experience. You can read a book about the certificate, about the areas of expertise, you can even pass the exams by doing so, but my belief is that a MCPD must have more practical knowledge, not just the ones given by a book.

    Good luck,

    Tibi

  • Hi Tibi

    Thanks for your message.

I will have some "on the job" experience, but I obviously want to get trained up correctly. The 2 will go hand in hand. The more training I have, the more work I'll be given and the more experience I'll gain. This is all in-house work, so I can learn whilst I work.

Can you let me know the exam references for MCTS: Web please, or point in the right direction.

    I appreciate all comments. Thanks.

  • Hi Roger,

Here is a link to the Microsoft Learning page which shows the information for the MCTS: Web 2.0

    http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcts/webapps/default.mspx

There are two exams required, 70-528 and 70-536. I would suggest you working on passing the 70-528 exam first. If you have been working with the technologies you will find this a very reasonable exam. The 70-536 exam covers a broad spectrum of information. You may or may not have used a lot of the classes covered in the exam. I find that the MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-528): Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Web-Based Client Development (ISBN: 9780735623347) and MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-536): Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Foundation did a good job in covering the scope of the exams. You will probably need to do a bit of research over and above these books for topics were you are not as confident about.

    Good luck!

  • Hi Roger,

Like wayne said start with http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/exams/70-536.aspx. There you will find whatever you need to solve this. After that you continue with http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/exams/70-528.mspx, and the last one you have to take is http://www.microsoft.com/learning/en/us/exams/70-547.mspx

    Good luck,

    Tibi
