Server Recovery - Can't find Files RRS feed

  • Question

  • I did a Server Recover on an extra SATA drive I had but it didn't find any of the duplicated folders I use to have.
So I hooked up the old sys drive via SATA to USB adapter on another computer and I can navigate to all the folders, sub folders and files, however when I try to open a file (weather it be a jpeg, Word doc, Outlook file, PDF etc, I get messages like "This file may be unsupported, damaged or corrupted". I then plugged the second drive I had the folders duplicating to and got the same messages! Maybe the are just "Tombstone Files" and they are really still there, safe and sound...
    Desperate need of help!

    Update
I just tried once more to get get the data off the second hard drive I had in the MSS where folders were duplicating to and it shows up as EMPTY!? Perhaps when I thought I checked it previously, I actually plugged in the old sys drive. In any case, I can't find any of our pictures, movies, Quickbooks file and 20 GB of business documents!
    Thanks again for any help!

You are probably looking at the tombstones, not the actual files (which are stored in a hidden folder called DE).

First things first:  Why are you doing a Server Recovery in the first place?

Anyway, considering you seem to be having issues with retrieving your data, my suggestion would be to pull each drive from the server (keeping track of which drive was in which slot), connect it to another PC, then copy everything you find on each drive inside X:\DE\shares (again, DE is hidden) to a safe location on that client.  Once you've done that (and you know the data is secure), put the drives back (each in the slot you took it out of), then try another Server Recovery.

  • In detail the procedure of recovering files is also described in the FAQ How to recover data after server failure.
