Remote Desktop with devices in another Mesh? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a number of devices in my Mesh that I can use Remote Desktop with. One of them is a PC that my mother owns because I occasionally help her with her system. She currently signs in with my Live ID because I think that's the only way her system can appear in my list of Mesh devices. Is it possible for her to have her own Live ID but for me to still have her system in my Mesh for Remote Desktop purposes? Asked another way, is it possible for me to add other people's computers to my Mesh for remote purposes (with their permission, of course) regardless of their MS Live sign-in?

I would use the normal Windows Remote Desktop for this purpose but I could never get it to work for systems behind a firewall (either mine or the one I want to remote to). I was pleasantly surprised to find the Live Mesh remote facility works regardless, and it has come in very handy.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

You can't currently share devices (i.e. actual machines) across Live Mesh accounts although you can do the following:

    1. create a new user for yourself on the target machine
    2. install live mesh (your account) under that new user
    3. install the remote desktop extensions when asked
    4. log out and install live mesh under the normal account - using whatever credentials you want.

Since the Live Mesh Remote Desktop feature runs as a service it is active even when you are not logged in, so your mother could use her account but you could still have access to the machine...

    Hope that helps!
