The report says you have a Blocked VLK, which means that (a) your computer has a Volume Licensing edition of Office Enterprise 2007 installed, and that (b) a Blocked Volume Licensing Key (VLK) was used to install it.  A "blocked" VLK is one that was issued by Microsoft to a business, educational institution, or governmental agency for their exclusive use in accordance with a Volume Licensing Agreement.  (Note that such use does NOT allow the resale of such VLKs.)  However, because the VLK may have been reported lost, stolen, or compromised to the internet by the original keyholder, or because the Volume Licensing Agreement has expired, Microsoft has blocked the VLK from further use.

As an individual consumer you should never have been sold Volume Licensing materials such as a VL CD, and you certainly should not have received a Blocked Product Key.

Your first course of action is to confront your seller with this information and demand either a full refund or to receive the genuine software you paid for.

If the seller refuses to help, please file a piracy report at
www.microsoft.com/piracy.  Also, depending upon whether you received "high quality" counterfeit maerials, you may qualify for the Office Complimentary Offer or for the Office Genuine Advantage discounted offer.  Please see the FAQ here:  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/FAQ.aspx?displaylang=en#ID0EKNAC

One other possibility is that at one time your computer did have a Genuine installation of Office installed, but for some reason it was replaced with the current installation which is nongenuine.  This could have happened if you took your computer to a repair shop and they reinstalled Windows and/or some or all of your programs.  You Get Genuine once again by uninstalling the current nongenuine installation of Office and using your Genuine Microsoft hologrammed Office installation CDs, along with the genuine Product Key found on your Office Edition's Certificate of Authenticity, to put back the genuine installation of Office you may have already had on the computer.

Note that many new computers come from their manufacturers with installations of Office.  Please understand that quite often these are Trial installations that are only valid for a certain number of uses, and further use of the Trial beyond that requires that you purchase a perpetual license for Office.

Did you purchase your Sony computer new or was it purchased used?  Neither Sony or other major computer manufacturers sell or install the Volume License Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 software.  They will only sell or install OEM software.

  • Hello R Man,

The installation of Office on the computer, Office Enterprise, is an edition of Office that is not offered by computer manufacturers for preinstallation of an OEM license.

Furthermore, the installed Office Enterprise license is a Volume License.  Volume Licenses are not preinstalled by OEM computer manufacturers.

As I mentioned in my first reply, the situation could be that the Office that came with your computer could have been overwritten at some point.  Have you ever had the computer into a shop for repair, or have you ever had a well-meaning friend "help" you by reinstalling Windows and/or Office?

Many computers come with Office preinstalled, but quite often this is a Trial edition of Office provided for free.  Once the trial is over, you have to purchase a perpetual license to continue to use the product at its full capability.  Please check the invoice or other paperwork that came with your Sony to determine if the Office that came with the Sony was Trial verision, or a perpetually licensed full version.  If a perpetually licensed version, it would most likely have been an extra-cost line item on the invoice.

Microsoft requires that OEM manufacturers who preinstall Office onto their computers provide the End User a way to reinstall Office if necessary.  Some manufacturers supply genuine Microsoft hologrammed discs to satisfy that requirement; others use a Recovery disc and/or hidden recovery partition that allows you to selectively restore inlcuded applications such a Office.  If it turns out that you did indeed have a perpetually licensed version of Office preinstalled on the computer, to Get Genuine you would uninstall the current nongenuine installation, restart twice, then use the Sony-supplied media or method to install the original perpetually licensed copy of Office back onto your Sony computer.

  • Hi, Thank you for your reply. No I have'nt sent my machine to the repair shop nor has the software been reinstalled by anyone. The laptop came bundled with Windows Vista Business & Microsoft Office. It's been around a year since I've been using it. Even if the Office software was a trial version it should have shown the warning much earlier. I've been seeing this warning only since saturday last. Is there any other way to check if it's genuine. Please advice. Thanks.

  • Hello R Man,

A puchase of a preinstalled Genuine Microsoft Office product will have physical evidence to look for.  Please look in the materials that came with your Sony for a Certificate of Authenticity for Office.  If Sony includes genuine Microsoft hologrammed CDs, the CoA will be affixed to the CD sleeve.  If Sony does not include Microsoft media to reinstall Office, then they will at least include the CoA on a CD-sized piece of paper the thickness of one or twostandard index cards.

(The concept is the same with Windows, but the CoAs look different.  The Windows Vista Business CoA is affixed to the bottom of your Sony laptop.)

EDIT:  The specifications for your model of Sony at the Sony website say that this Sony comes with a 60-day Trial of Office Professional 2007:
    http://www.sony-asia.com/product/vgn-sr13gn

Therefore at some point the Trial edition of Office has been uninstalled, and this nongenuine installation of Office Enterprise 2007 has been installed.
